No, you do not pay them. They get a commission from the bookings (hotel, cruise line, etc)

Wow, really?!? i would have never thought. I mean whats to stop people from getting the info and then doing it without the travel agent? Seems like wasted time if you dont get the sale.

I've priced out stuff online without a TA and then checked the same with a TA and the TA is always (in my cases) cheaper. Plus, if you do find a better deal they will match what you find. I think it depends on the trip. I used a TA for our honeymoon to Hawaii and our trip to Italy. When we're going to several different places a TA is great. She booked the hotels, flights, car service to and from hotel, Eurorail train tickets to the different cities, etc. In Hawaii she booked the car rental, inter-island flights, some excursions, recommended restaurants and booked some... For small vacations I usually book online myself.

Many times, travel agents are able to negotiate discounts so if you book it on your own, it would cost more.

For big vacations (resorts, cruises), I always use a TA, to get good deals and to also have a real human being to deal with if there ever is a problem. We were not crazy about our honeymoon location, but made the best of it. Our TA told us we should have called her, she would have moved us to a different resort. Lesson learned. If we just book flights, I use the airline website. For work travel I use the company TA.

That is a problem for travel agents, though. People get information and then try to book themselves. Personally, I really like that a travel agent organizes the trip and puts it together. I just tell her where, what flight times I prefer and she goes from there. She does the things that I do not have a lot of time to do. She knows that I read internet reviews before we officially book but we go through her. There have been times when she did not save me money but we did not spend extra for her either. It's a win-win situation.

people do this to my MIL all the time, but they are silly because she tells them that if they find it cheaper they can price match or do better.. you are better off booking with a TA then online because so many times people book online and then smoething gets messed up and they are stuck. People call her all the time to fix it and she cant.

People who didn't book through her have the nerve to call when someting goes wrong? I couldn't do that. Maybe that's why I book through a travel agent even though I read travel reviews online.
