Do you have a red front door?

DH swears it means a wh0re house and my friend just said it means your mortgage is paid off. What others have you heard?

My parents house had a red door for years (not anymore) and neither of those meanings were true.

Different ideas I found around the InterWebs...


The Feng Shui aspect of painting your door Red is that in Feng Shui, the front door is considered the "Mouth of Chi" where all good energy enters a space. Red is considered to be the most auspicious color in Feng Shui. So it's done to attract luck and good energy.



i always believed a red door was derived from the Old Testament when the Jewish Slaves of Egypt were instructed by God to paint the blood of a sheep on their door so that the Angel of Vengence (don't know exactly what it was refered to in the bible) would pass over that dwelling and harm no one inside.


In early America a red door was a sign of "welcome." When people had to travel by horse and buggy they had to stop often. If they came upon a house with a red door that usually meant they would be able to spend the night. There is even rumor that a red front door was used in the under ground railroad as a sign for the slaves traveling north that that house was a safe house.

here are some things i found online:

In China, it's tradition to paint the front door red before the new year, to invite good luck and happiness.
In Catholocism, the red door on a chapel symbolized the blood of christ, and other martyrs, to signify that the ground beyond the door (inside the church) was holy, and a sanctuary from physical and spiritual evils.

In Ireland, front doors are painted red to ward-off ghosts and evil spirits.

People have been painting their doors red for quite some time. I don't think having a red door would necessarily be out-of-context on an older house.

My door is red. In our house it means my parents had some left over red paint and let us use it for our door.

This just made me laugh aloud! No we don't have a red front door, but it makes me wonder about the meaning of all other colored doors. Anyone have an idea about any other colors. I have glossy black. Maybe I am just boring and traditional?

I just think from a design standpoint it's very inviting because it iluminates the entryway. At least that's the reasoning on HGTV!
