Do you give your dogs a heartworm preventative?
Sentinel, Heartguard, Interceptor... That kind of thing. Do you give your dog it, every month?
I've been reading about Heartworm since our new girl Ginger had it, and I want to know the long term affects. It's horrendous. Thankfully, she's now negative, it is curable, and besides possible sensitivity to heat, she's fine.
But in my travels, I came across this:
“Because we’re such a mobile society and only 59 percent of the households give preventative anyway, there are heartworm-positive dogs being transported across the country … every day,” says Nelson
Almost 30% of dog owners don't give heartworm preventative?

We give Luna a preventative every month as well as a flea and tick protector.

Every month. I forgot one month after DD was born and I was panicking. WHen I read about heartworm in my panic, it was so awful!!! But I was reassured that skipping the meds only one month cannot allow a heartworm to grow, so I was save. We got our dogs tested at their annual and they were ok, thank GOD.
But around here, when the weather is fickle in the winter, it must be given year round due to the mosquitos. So after reading what I read, I vow to never forget again.

We give Jensen a heartworm med that also prevents fleas. I think it is Sentinal but I have to check.

BTW, my neighbor's dog got heartworm even though the owner did not give meds in the "winter". He was shocked to find out that dogs can get heartworm even when you think it's too cold out. Honestly, I have not seen the dog, I hope he did ok.

I use Sentinel and my dog still got fleas. It's not strong enough to really prevent fleas so I'd consider a flea topical like advantix too!

The max dose you can skip is one month, otherwise they are very much at risk for heartworm. Even one month you don't want to skip. With the amount of mosquitos we have here, heartworm is very possible. Please try to remember, bc heartworm and it's treatment are very severe.

We dont give our dog anything, my mother has never in her life given her dogs any form of heartworn medication and none of them have ever had a problem. Personally I dont find giving them medication unless they needi it neccesary

Are you basing that decision on anything other than your mother's experience? Do you not give flea and tick preventative either? Does your vet support this decision?
Sorry for the questions, but I want to learn more if you have information to share.
