Due to what the sacrament is actually about, I feel it should be done within the first 3 months.

I was baptized at 3 months, my brother was baptized at 4 weeks due to a sudden illness.

I agree completely!

I agree, however, due to the Lental season DD was not bapitized until almost 5 months. However, when she was in the NICU, the priest came by asked if we wanted her baptized in case anything happened Chat Icon .

I personally do not believe there is a certain age. My family was appalled that DD was not baptized by three months. However, my priest said the average age seems to be around 6 months.

this seems about right. DS was the youngest baby (and there were 8!) the day he was baptized. The 8 babies ranged from 8wks - 10m.

Re: Do you believe a child should be baptized by a certain age?

DD was born in September, and baptized in April.

Not what I wanted, but se was born early and we knew we were going to start to plan it until we were in our house.

With this one, I'd like to have him/her baptized in July/August. He/She will be born in April. (God wiling)

No one had any problems with the date of the christening.

In my family, babies are baptized right away. I was 5 weeks old, but each of my kids were 3 months, and my family thought that was late. I would say by a year.

Re: Do you believe a child should be baptized by a certain age?

We wanted to do it ASAP but here we are 4 months later and still waiting to schedule. DD was born in Sept and I was first nervous about the flu and her being around so many people. Then, it was the holidays. Then, in Jan when our church did the baptisms (in NJ) DH brother had his daughter's baptism that weekend in LI. So, that leads us to Feb- the church does them on Valentine's day- that's a no go. Now we are into March- was just told they don't do them b/c of lent. However, I was told yesterday that they ARE concidering doing them in March b/c no one wanted them in Feb. At this point, I just want the church to get back to me to confirm!! I'm just a little frustrated at this time about this if you can't tell lol. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Sorry for crashing but just wanted to say that anyone can baptize a baby! We try to schedule baptisms as early as possible but we always baptize the baby in the hospital as well. It is like the sacrament of marriage, it does not need a priest.

Re: Do you believe a child should be baptized by a certain age?

I'm the same boat as you. My DH's family believes in ASAP...I'm ok with waiting.

I was under the impression no baptisims were allowed during Lent...(Feb 17th-Easter April 4th), so we were going to wait till May ( two communions and godmothers daughters sweet 16 in april)...But No one wants us to wait till then. ( They will be 7 months)..

Now your post has me curious if my church DOES do them during Lent and if so, we would choose that and I will be freaking out like you how to plan it in such a short timeframe. I don't want want to not be able to find a place to book

Re: Do you believe a child should be baptized by a certain age?

back home they believe a child should be baptized at exactly 40 days (I'm Georgian Orthodox)
But DD was baptized at 8 month.
I personally don't really believe that a child should be baptized at a certain age and in our case (DH is Catholic) I almost wanted to wait and let DD decide when she was older, even though DH and I had agreed early on that our kids would be Orthodox ..... but in the end we decided to baptize her (Orthodox)

Josh was done at 3 weeks...we like to do it as early as possible.

That being said, and me living OOS...I now realize baptism=houseguests.

I think this baby will be done at 3 mos old.

Re: Do you believe a child should be baptized by a certain age?

IMO, no. DD was baptized at 8 months for purely selfish reasons. We wanted to have it at our house in the summer so we waited until June. I actually liked having it when she was older. I wasn't so nervous with a bunch of people handling her as I would have been if she was 1 or 2 months old. She was able to interact more, and IMO, it was more fun for everyone.

Since DD#2 will be a late April baby, I am not sure what we will do - I'd rather wait and do it at the end of summer/early fall.

DS was 7 weeks. There is no right or wrong time, just the meaning behind the sacrament most people choose to do it sooner rather than laterChat Icon

Re: Do you believe a child should be baptized by a certain age?

I baptized Robbie at 8 months and Noah at 1 year. It completely freaked out the older, more superstitious members of my family. But I don't buy into superstition - and my God doesn't only watch over and protect those children who are baptized into a particular faith.. so I was fine with it.

if u asked my MIL she would have said within the first month. DS was baptized just shy of 12 weeks b/c of the holidays.

Now a days people baptize children when they're kids. I dont think age is such a big issue these days.

ITA and I had the same issue with my inlaws...they believe it needs to be done ASAP...I got flack for waiting until after the holidays...DS was a little over 2 mosChat Icon

I'm no longer Catholic, but I believe even the Catholic church has reversed their stance on early baptisms being necessary for babies to go to heaven. I think this is why so many people do it early traditionally.

IMO, there is no reason to rush and panic over it. Do it when it's reasonable for you to do it. We had DSs when he was almost a year old, but his first year was very rough for us on many levels. I'm honestly amazed we managed to get it together in time.
