Do both Godparents have to be Catholic? UPDATED- I spoke to the church.
We wanted my best friends to be the baby's Godparents. My girlfriend is Catholic but her husband is Jewish. o you think the church would allow this?

UPDATE:
I spoke w/ the rectory and they said only one godparent must be Catholic & confirmed and the other must be a Christian.
I guess it really depends on the church.

A Jewish person cannot be a Godparent - they do not believe at all the same things a Catholic would. It's the same if someone was Catholic and then converted to Judism - they have renounced the Catholic faith and therefore cannot be a Godparent.
However, any other Christian religion can be a Godparent, they will be known as a "Christian Witness" and one Godparent needs to be Catholic.
I used to work in a Catholic Church Rectory as a parish secretary so this question would come up a lot.

you only have to have one Catholic stand up to be a Godparent, the other *if you choose another* will be considered a sponsor..they can definately do this for you depending on your church (i know mine does)

The rules vary church to church. My sister and BIL are Catholic and baptized my niece in the Catholic church--her godfather is Jewish.

oh i hope this is the case. our friends are so wonderful and they celebrate both Catholic and Jewish traditions in their home.

oh i hope this is the case. our friends are so wonderful and they celebrate both Catholic and Jewish traditions in their home.
To be very honest, and not meaning to offend, but I have found that anyone who has a Jewish godparent was not honest with the church to begin with about the religion of the sponsor. I'd be very surprised if the priest "allowed" that Jewish person to be a Godparent in the true sense of the word.
It is possible maybe that the priest let them stand up for the baby, but their name would not appear at all in the registry as a godparent, nor would it appear on the certificate.

Jared's godmother is jewish and we let the church know that. They didn't put her name on the certificate. His godfather (her dh) is catholic.

Each church is different in what they will allow. Our church had no problem as long as one godparent was Catholic.

In my church as long as one of the godparents were catholic it was ok for the others to be of another religion

The church only requires one godparent to be Catholic. I have a Jewish friend that is a godparent to a Catholic child. He doesn't mind and the church certainly didn't care.
My sister actually named two women as godparents (me and my other sister) since we don't have any brothers and neither of us were married at the time.
the church only acknowledged one of us though but my sister didn't care. Naming godparents is all up to you and who you feel will be best for your child.
