Do babies NEED to change to larger size pacifier?
DS is a total pacifier addict. He uses the NUK pacifiers, and on the package they are either 0-6 months or 6 months+. I tried the larger size (he is 10 months), and he spits it out.
Will it hurt his teeth/mouth to stay with the smaller size? Does he NEED to go to the larger size?

I will tell you that Soothies are horrible for oral development. We have seen patients form their whole dentition around them and it's worse then a thumbsucker I would switch to an orthodontic pacifier. And follow the sizes the company recommends for the age

AJ uses the 0-3 Soothie... she never liked the level 2. She's now 20mo old and she stopped the paci during the day at 12mo, but Daddy gave her paci all the time, so I have been breaking her recently of it at home. Now she only gets it to sleep, then it falls out anyway.
ETA: she HATED the orthodontic pacifier I had two packs of them. I'd try them for a full day here and there and she wanted nothing to do with them, just cried until she was red, coughing and choking. So yeah.. after suffering a day through (cause I believe you REALLY gotta try) I would go back to the soothie. I 'tried' off and on for months. Finally gave up

I am not sure if they NEED to but my DD never did. She also used the nuk and I bought one pack of the bigger size and she never went for it. Also kept it until over 3 yrs old! I noticed it effecting her teeth but now 3 months off it and they are actually starting to move back.

I don't know if they need to, but my kids had a hard time keeping the newborn ones in their mouths, so I gave them the the 6months+ ones after about a month.

DS won't take the appropriate pacifier size for his age (he uses the Avent ones).
As for the PP on Orthodontic pacifiers - my mom works for an orthodontist and he told me make sure not to use them.

I don't know if they need to, but we switched to the larger size Nuks when DS was 6 or 7 months old. He wasn't a huge fan of them at first, but he got used to them.

Not to use an orthodontic pacifier?? I've worked with an orthodontist who would only use them for her own children. I have never heard of them not being recommended?? Like I said I've seen what the Soothie does in my own practice and we are very much against them. They are fine for newborns but not meant to allow for proper jaw alignment and dentition.

thats so odd. it was recommended by the hospital and a friend who is a dentist. its the only pacifier DS will take too.

Re: Do babies NEED to change to larger size pacifier?
It depends what the hospital has as far as samples and whats cheapest for them. Many hospitals are now sending babies home with NUKS. This is not meant for debate. It's what I see in practice and what I was taught in school. As parents we are given all types of info and it is up to us to make educated decisions for our children. If you feel comfortable using what you are using then continue to do so....
For the PP Avent pacifiers have orthodontic nipples
