You can eat wherever you want in Disney without the meal plan. The meal plan is just pre-paying your meals basically with a small discount. Breakfast is about $10 with a drink per person for a quick service. Sit down, more. Check allearsnet.com for menu prices!

The signature restaurants http://www.bestwdw.com/dining/signature
are pretty pricey. I know at Narcoosse's at the Grand Floridian, the entree I got was $75.00! Totally delicious but something I would never had ordered if we weren't on the dining plan. Breakfasts can be as expensive or as cheap as you want them depending on what type of breakfast eater you are. You can pick up a quick granola and yogurt at one of the quick service places or have a sit down meal at one of the restaurants. Lots of people bring dry cereal and breakfast bars with them from home and pick up milk one of the gift shops and have breakfast in their room before hitting the parks. You can also pre-order food and have it delivered to your hotel from Garden Grocer. We saved a bit by having beer, water, soda and snacks delivered to our hotel so we weren't constantly running to the gift shop for stuff.

Re: disney food question

I highly recommend either bringing breakfast food with you or ordering from Garden Grocer. Breakfast time at the hotels is crazy, particularly at food courts. Instead of wasting time on line and eating you could eat in your room while you finish getting ready. Plus, for me, I hate wasting money on breakfast food.

We were there not too long ago. As others said, you can eat wherever you can get a table/reservation with or without the dining plan.

We had the basic meal plan included in our package, so we got 1 sit down meal, 1 counter service meal (which is still a full meal, plus drink and dessert) and 1 snack per person each day. This was more than enough food for us. You also get refillable cups that you can get unlimited drinks with at your hotel. The kids weren't on it, so we bought them meals, which was inexpensive. At buffets they could eat off our plates. We also brought some of our own snacks.

I had heard good things about Garden Grocer and was planning to use them for milk, some drinks, snacks, etc. I didn't realize that there was a $40 minimum purchase plus a $14 delivery fee. I wasn't looking to get that much stuff and with the delivery fee, I figured I was better off packing some snacks and buying milk, etc at the hotel. I guess this depends on your needs and budget though. For us, Garden Grocer would have been a waste of money.
