Differing Opinions
If a peditrician that you trusted and liked had a totally different opinion than you about an important issue, would you switch doctors? Say if the doctor was 100% pro-circumcision, and you were not circumsizing your son-would you still see him?

Re: Differing Opinions
I would absolutely switch ped.s if they had a totally opposite opinion on an important issue to me. Infact, I DID switch. Best decision ever.

Re: Differing Opinions
I think it completely depends on the issue.
Cricumcision? No, I wouldn't switch. I would just do what I wanted.
If it was something else, like a decision I couldn't make on my own, or needed a referral or something, I would consider switching.

I agree-
Circumcision- no
However if he didnt support my decision to BF lets say- then Id be out the door.....
I guess it depends, on how much the Dr.'s opinion effects your visits and such....
For ex:
Circum. we'd have different opinions but once its done its done..
BFing- well if the Dr didnt support me and constantly pushed FF on me- when its not something I wanted to do... its be another story...

Re: Differing Opinions
If it were something where we had differing opinions but my choice was the bottom line -- I wouldn't switch. But if he was so adamant and unaccepting of my own values and opinions that he wouldn't provide the care that I expected (and of course I wouldn't be expecting anything ridiculous!) then I would absolutely change.

Well one of the main reasons I was concerned about his stance on circumcision is because he gave very outdated information, and he told me my son would have a psychological problem if he wasn't circed. Also, when a boy is uncircumcised you have to be careful in doctors visits that they don't try to retract the foreskin-it can cause damage. My thinking was if he had wrong info on circumcision and was 100% pro-circ that he wouldn't know how to properly care for a uncirced boy.

I see what your saying... But IMO- to me my issue wouldnt be so much the differing opinions, as much as it would be that my Dr was updated on his info... which could effect his care for my child...

Re: Differing Opinions
Yup. I switched because I was asking about immunizations - and he pooh poohed me. I didn't think that was cool. I'm a new mom, asking an opinion - you need to take the time to reassure me to inject my child with something that causes severe effects in 1 in 18,000 - because if my kid winds up being 1, I'll never forgive myself for not asking about the risks.

Re: Differing Opinions
I switched peds. The first one was so old and outdated and didn't support breastfeedingl I was so happy that my SIL had someone she really liked!

Re: Differing Opinions
I switched Dr.'s for other reasons and I was so happy I did. She was pro-circumsion but never said anything to me when I told her I wasn't doing it. It did bother me that she never explained how to care for it even though I knew how to I think that is something that should be explained just like if he were circumsized. She also pushed FF and not BF which really bothered me and never seemed to care about Luka. I was always anxious and never felt comfortable about asking her questions and when I did ask questions I felt like I just got a basic answer with no explination. The dr. I go to now my SIL has been using since she had my first niece 5 years ago and this dr. is great. She interacts with Luka and I feel so much better seeing her. I think if you dont feel comfortable with the doctor regardless of the reasoning you should switch. You should never be made to feel like you made the wrong choice.

Re: Differing Opinions
For me it would depend on how he expresses his/her opinion. My doctor is very in favor of vaccinating and I am not so much in favor of it but I do it but he has never once forced his beliefs on me. I delayed vaccinating my daughter and we follow our own schedule and he never says boo about it. I can deal with this but if he harped on me about vaccinating, circumcision, whatever then yes I would have to switch but if the doctor could keep his beliefs to himself, especially about something not medically necessary like circumcising then I could stay with them if I liked everything else about the doctor.

Re: Differing Opinions
I probably would... Actually where we go doesn't seem to really support breast feeding In the beginning when I was concerned about DD "colic" type symptoms they suggested stop nursing and gave me samples of formula... Thank God we trusted our insticnts and kept nursing and all is ok!
