Did we work on our outsides this weekend?

When I looked at my house last winter I thought all the snow on all the greenery was beautiful. Unfortunately once we closed and the snow melted we realized we were left with an overgrown JUNGLE. Chat Icon Trees on top of trees, bushes 10x the size they were meant to be, dead branches and plants everywhere. Last year we were able to 'clean up' some of it - pruning and cutting back but we focused a ton on the inside so now, we're trying to tackle some of the outside mess.

Friday: 7 hours in my backyard --- weeding, raking, sweeping, washing down everything so that we can have playdate and BBQ's. Chat Icon
Also, a tree service came and took down a huge spuce in my front yard that was leaning towards my house after last weeks storm.

Saturday: DH, My Dad and I spent 7 hours in the front of the house pulling out old bushes, cutting down 3 trees and pruning 7 more. We ended up with 30 bundles and 25 bags of debris. Chat Icon

I have no grass in the front of my house - just rocks, lots and lots of little dirty white rocks that were under the pine tree. I am going to see if I can get someone over to get rid of them because I just cannot dig them out by myself. Then hopefully we can lay sod. I have the ugly house on the block Chat Icon Chat Icon Lots to do before the end of spring!

damn girlie you were busy. Chat Icon It must feel good to do all of that though. You will love your yard when you are done.

I thought we were busy today with taking down one of the trees that fell into our yard after the last storm. We still have to finish it up tomorrow and prune other bushes and one tree tomorrow too. I love Spring though. Chat Icon

Re: Did we work on our outsides this weekend?

I'd be laid up for a week if I put in two straight full days in my yard! I've been coming home from work and spending an hour in the yard each night this past week cleaning up from the general winter debris and storm debris, and I spent another 2 hours today. I have most of the garden beds in decent shape and a good portion of the lawn raked up, cleaning up all the sticks, thatch, etc. Tomorrow I'll spend another couple of hours trying to clean up more of the garden beds, and next week (when it's not raining) I'll tackle the rest of the sticks and rake the back yard. We still have a big tree in our front yard but it's along the road and the town has us on the list to see if it counts as a town tree - if so, they'll remove it.

We haven't really had time. I have, however, looked about and did a lot of Chat Icon Chat Icon and Chat Icon.

I do need to call the spring clean-up people soon, because I am looking forward to planting.

Re: Did we work on our outsides this weekend?

yup! i did (DH was working a double):

*finally installed my dishwasher
*got my pond "un-screened" (we had a net over to keep the leaves out - compliments of sellers)
*turned pond on (thankfully no issues with that)
*fed the fish and they apparently started mating alreadyChat Icon
*cleaned /raked backyard beds (tons of leaves and cat poopChat Icon )
*sucked up mulch and said cat poop (didnt know it was there until this point -barf) in the leaf hog.
*started lawn mower
*mowed backyard
*took down shutters, number sign and mailbox and painted red
*went to supermarket for ground beef and charcoal
*replaced shutters and painted items (need to take down again and paint one more coat)
*limed the front and back
*did four loads of laundry
*changed sheets
*back to supermarket for kids' shampoo
*spent time chatting with DH
*passed out and slept like a baby!!

OH! did all this WHILE overseeing my children playing on bikes and their wagon...

OMG....you win!

I took DD to the Deer Park outlets to get her some baby PJ's with my Gap coupon. Went to HD and bought some spring blossoms.

Raked
picked up garbage
planted pansies in window boxes and pots on patio. Planted some rununculous (sp?) and 2 Heather bushes.
Put the fences back around all of the beds.

Re: Did we work on our outsides this weekend?

No, we are going to have a landscaper do the Spring clean up like we did last year, then we will start working a bit outside and then planting when the time is right. We did a lot last yr as far as weeding and ripping out what was over grown, so this year should be better.

Im PG this year so I'll be limited as to what I can do, since I'm 7 months now. But I am hoping to do some planting, I enjoyed it so much last yr!!

Whoa Nellie. Chat Icon

The traditional "do not plant before" date is May 15 because supposedly, that's when the danger of frost will have passed. Pansies are annuals and used to cold weather, and since they're in pots, she could move them if she wanted to. I personally wouldn't plant now, I'm concerned that the weather has been unpredictable.

What we did:

Sheared 2 ornamental grasses, composted
Removed dead foliage from daylilies, echinacea and rudbeckia, composted.
Chased dogs down the block when they escaped as I was going into the backyard
Removed old temporary fence for planting bed
Light weeding
Pruned some arborvitae
Started cleaning basement, put lots of junk to the curb
Bought and assembled two new shelving units
Organized basement
Bought metal fencing for backyard border and patio beds, grass seed

We also did our usual chores, food shopping, laundry and such, went to the St. Patricks parade with the dogs today, and we are all kind of tired!

Pansy's are hearty in cold weather so they are OK this time of year but it's way too early for the summer flowers like Impatience, Petunia, Geranium. You probably won't even find them at garden centers yet. It's getting down into the 30's at night still. Mother's Day weekend is usually a safe bet for the warm-weather flowers as the earliest you want to get them out around here.
