Did anyone not have the AFP test done?
I'm not sure what to do about this test. I just don't like how the rate of false positives is so high. Anyone not have this test done?

Re: Did anyone not have the AFP test done?
I did not do the test. I didn't want any unnecessary worries. THe way I looked at it - if something was wrong there was nothing I could do about it. I would have my baby regardless. Doctor said if those are your feelings their is no point in doing the test and givning yourself stress.

This is pretty much how I feel. Plus, won't they be able to detect some of those same potential problems at the Level II?

You most definitely have a choice. Don't let them think that you must get it done. I'm just having a hard time wanting to get a test where 90% of the babies that test positve turn out to be fine. Granted, only about 5% of people will have a positive result, but there are a lot of factors that can cause a positive result that have nothing to do with anything being wrong with your child.

what's the AFP test?
It is the blood test that is given between 15-18 weeks that detects neural tube defects like spina bifida. It is a ratio test, much like the ultrascreen, not a diagnostic test.

yea i thought it was optional.. im not too thrilled about how they make it seem like its mandatory... if it wasnt for this pregnancy board i would have never known it was optional..

Re: Did anyone not have the AFP test done?
We skipped the test. My doctor told me about the high rate of incorrect positives and frankly that I was a low risk category. We decided to skip it altogether.

Re: Did anyone not have the AFP test done?
I didn't 2.5 years ago when I was pregnant with my DD(by choice). But I brought the false positive rate thing up to my doctor the last time I saw him and he said they changed the test and to do it. So I am. You have to feel comfortable taking it. Don't let anyone sway your decision.

Re: Did anyone not have the AFP test done?
I had all of the tests done to have a complete record, but I was clear with my doctor about our beliefs and which tests we did not want to know the results on.
It is completely up to you how you want to handle it.

Re: Did anyone not have the AFP test done?
They have changed the way that its done so I went for it !! With DD#1 it come back a false positive and I had an amnio done , mind you I was only 19 at the time but that was just the blood test now they do the blood test and a sono so its a liitle more accurate but Im sure still wrong a percentage of the time. Do what you feel comfortable with

As far as I know, the AFP is still just a blood test, there is no sono involved.

Re: Did anyone not have the AFP test done?
I had the AFP done....
my attitude is this:
They have high false positive rates, but fairly low false negative rates... so if I were to get a + result, I would have to get more tests done because I could be at risk, but if I get a - result, I'm in the clear
I don't want to avoid spina bifida screening because a baby like that needs to be delivered in a very different way from a healthy child. I want the heads-up so we can prepare to treat the condition ASAP.

Re: Did anyone not have the AFP test done?
1st baby we didn't do it and our baby had anencephaly which could have been determined by the AFP test. I was mad at myself because I would have known sooner, although the outcome would have been the same.
2nd baby, decided to take the test to make sure there was no anencephaly, and the test came back with a positive result for Trisomy 18, even though the 12 week testing did not. Now I am mad at myself AGAIN because we went in to test for 1 thing, and got something else that came up. Very frustrating.
When we have our 3rd child, we will be taking only the monoscreen for anencephaly and for nothing else. I am sick and tired of being upset and it is waring on me.
You have to be prepared for what the tests may show you. You have to think ahead and think of how you will deal with the results. It is not easy to deal with.

Re: Did anyone not have the AFP test done?
I had the test done and everything turned out fine! I know it can be very nerve wrecking because you just want your baby to be healthy. But the odds of something being wrong are highly unlikely. I think you should get it done because then you will be wondering the rest of your pregnancy.

Re: Did anyone not have the AFP test done?
I should add that I just got a call and the AFP results are normal
since the false - results are very low, I can rest and enjoy the remaining wait for my level II
(I like these screening tests becuase they're not invasive.... I would be nervous getting an amnio)

Re: Did anyone not have the AFP test done?
I had the test done and it was fine. Can't hurt to have it done and then if there's a cause for concern you can investigat futher - JMO, that's what I would have done if we had needed to.
