deed + town question

i purchased my house a few months ago and called the town to see what i needed to apply for star...they didn't have my deed on file???? so my questions are
1-how long does it take them to get my deed?
2-wasn't my title closer supposed to give them my deed?
any info on this would be appreciated!

I'm pretty sure the deeds get recorded with the County Clerk and it takes a few months for it to be done.

You would have to call the county clerks office and they might be able to help you. If it is Suffolk County then it should be of record with the county fairly quickly within a month. In Nassau it takes a little longer--6-8 weeks. That being said you should have received a copy of your deed at the closing which is usually sufficient to apply for the star application along with a copy of utility bill in your name or your license with the new address.

I received a copy of my deed at closing, but I got the 'official' one (which was also a photocopy) a month or two later. They didn't have our stuff in their system either yet, it takes a while.

But you should have a copy of your deed, or your lawyer should, and you can give that in with your STAR paperwork.

thanks girls....i called my lawyer and he said it takes awhile to be recorded in the town...i will be using a pc of my deed (i had no idea what it looked like! but he walked me through my paperwork and i found it!!!)
