DD is getting a flat head!
my 6 week old DD is getting a flat head on one side! When she sleeps she favors one side. When I try to move her head to the other side, she either resists, or ends up on that side anyway. What should I do? She has her 2 month appointment on June 17. should I wait or call the dr sooner? I did a search on hear and most people said it corrects itself. I'm concerned about it and upset. Any thoughts, suggestions?

It definitely corrects itself.....DD #1 had such a flat head in the back and now she is almost 4 and her head isn't flat....I'd just make sure I was giving her plenty of tummy time during the day.

Re: DD is getting a flat head!
Someone on here recommended the Boppy Noggin Nest when DS was this age and I swear by it now. We used it religiously in the car seat, bouncy, everywhere and it rounded out within weeks.

Re: DD is getting a flat head!
Both of my children got flat head. My second child's, DD, corrected itself. We just made sure to reposition her head a lot, and did a lot of tummy time!
With my first child, DS, his flat head was actually an indicator of torticollis, which required physical therapy to loosen up his neck muscles. It was many many many months of PT and then the MDs talked about helmet therapy. Eventually, we rejected the helmet, and he still has flat head, but with all the hair he has (he'll be 3 in July) you can't really tell.

I used the Noggin Nest and LOVED it!! DD never got a flat head. I got it on amazon pretty cheap.

Re: DD is getting a flat head!
Keep changing her position of sleeping, and get the noggin nest. That is the best!

Re: DD is getting a flat head!
Instead of trying to move DD's head, put her down on the opposite side of the crib/bassinet

DD has a flat spot on the back of her head, I got this pillow a few weeks ago and have already seen improvement. But like PPs said, make sure you do a lot of tummy time.

Re: DD is getting a flat head!
My DD also was getting flathead. At her 4 month appointment the dr. said that it usually corrects itself--now she is 5 months old and sleeps on her side/belly and what do you know? It's going away!

Re: DD is getting a flat head!
My son had this BAD. My ped threatened us with him wearing a helmet. Long story short we amped up tummy time and by like 9 months old it was fine. Now at 2 he is 100% fine.
Lots and lots of tummy time and it mostly always corrects itself.
they also sell this thing that goes under their head when they are layign flat to riase it a bit. Darn, I wish I remembered what it was called . Iw ill see if I can find the name for you.

Just keep rotating her. What does the ped say?

Re: DD is getting a flat head!
My DD had the same issue which the ped noticed at 6.5 weeks, but when we went for her last check up (2 weeks ago, she was 15 weeks) it had corrected itself,

this did not work since she still favored turning her head and laying on that side.

Yes! It doesn't always correct itself - usually leads to torticollis. This has become more common with the back to sleep campaign but in most cases it is easily corrected and resolved.
You should bring this up at your next ped appt and in the meanwhile rotate and try to get her to stretch her neck muscles - paly with toys and objects that grab her attention the direction you want her to start looking.

Re: DD is getting a flat head!
Personally, I would call the pediatrician before the next appointment even though this is not a cause for huge alarm. The preference to go to one side and the flattening of the head on one side seem to me, as a lay person who has simply known a lot of people who have experienced it with their kids, to be some indication of torticolis. It's best to treat torticolis early with physical therapy. I know several people who did this and it was just a few months of physical therapy and that was it. They did not have to consider using a helmet.

Re: DD is getting a flat head!
we are faced w/ this as well.. well actually 1 out of 4 babies are... (since babies are supposed to always sleep on backs)
we got noggin nest
i rotated his position in crib , bassinet, changing table.... we put a mobile up in a different position.
tummy time.... and sometimes when we go for walks, i position him on 1 side (w/ a rolled up blanket under him)
my DS still tends to roll over on one side, but.... i keep forcing him to roll other way when we play on floor! try ur best, but dont stress...... it'll be ok!
