DD gets super sweaty when trying to sleep
My DD is 2 and this is the her bedtime routine (her crib is next to our bed) 8:30pm we go to bed, we put on her final lotion of the night and put on her scratch sleeve and give her a bottle (I know, its bad that we dont brush her teeth after). I lie on the bed and relax and she drinks her milk. 80% of the time she falls asleep in about 15 minutes. Sometimes she stands up and hands me the bottle, then its trouble - she ends up walking around and jumping and so on! anyway, thats not the point of this post :)
She usually sleeps fine until around 12:30am, then she will stir and moan/cry (while sleeping) every hour or so. I was concerned until I read this article: http://www.babysleepsite.com/night-terrors-nightmares/baby-toddler-night-terrors-nightmares-series/
It basically says that: The first few hours of sleep of the night is (supposed to be) the deepest. It is during this transition between sleep cycles that you wake briefly. You might roll over or you might pull the cover up over you. It is usually brief and you go right back to sleep. This is NORMAL to wake briefly. Sometimes, however, this process is not so smooth and not so quick and explains why your baby sometimes wakes up crying.
Makes sense, so I thought nothing of it.
But this week I noticed that her head is VERY VERY hot and sweaty while she is falling asleep. For example, last night she got into bed around 8:15pm, she fell asleep by 9pm. But periodically I touched her head and it was hot and wet, its as if she just washed her hair. The bed was wet like she just peed the bed.
Its not the whole head, just the part that has hair, her forehead was normal temperature, her body was normal. I went back in the room around midnight and her head was warm but dry.
Any ideas what it could be?
1. Its too hot I dont think this is it. When I first noticed it, it was during the HOT weekend, but the past few days have been very nice so I dont think its due to the heat.
2. Too much clothes She was wearing a tshirt and her scratch sleeve and just a diaper so I don't think its too much clothing
3. Too much hair She doesn't even have that much hair! :( Its been 2 years and her hair is barely to her chin, its not thick, its very thin and whispy, it actually looks like she is balding because her hair is so thin.
4. she is working too hard while drinking the milk / milk is too hot The milk is only warm, yesterday I kept it on the cooler side. She could be working hard while drinking, but I dont think she could work hard enough to sweat that much.
5. Night sweats Could be...but she was fine last night around midnight so it seems like its only while she is trying to get to sleep that she sweats buckets. And its just her head/hair. Her forehead is fine, her body is fine and so on.
Any other possibilites?
Thank you all!

I'd think the room is too hot. When DS goes to bed, I literally have his window AC as high as possible.
Is she using any blankets? I find I am always very hot when I am trying to go to sleep. Once asleep, I am fine under the blankets.

I think her room may just be too warm for her. We've had our ac on in our bedrooms every night this past week.

Re: DD gets super sweaty when trying to sleep
At about two, she is likely waking up with the urge to pee. I would switch out the last bottle of milk for water. This way she will be more hydrated. I am not sure what a scratch shirt is. I did not lotion my kids for that long, so their natural body oils would develop. I think I stopped lotioning up at three months old. I kept up with a moisturing body wash, and still have my kids use it, but that is it. The lotion may be conflicting with her pores and skin development. So I would just have her wear one shirt. Switch to water and read before bed. I would also think about switching from a bottle eventually, but this might be too much change all at once, so I would do at next month.

Re: DD gets super sweaty when trying to sleep
DS runs really warm when he sleeps. Your daughter's room is too warm for her. Pump up the A/C. What temp do you have the house at night?

DD gets super sweaty when trying to sleep
Hi all,
Scratch Sleeve: https://www.scratchsleeves.co.uk/shop/image/cache/catalog/Cream/Baby-Blue-06-09m_Front-228x228.jpg
So its not a full shirt, but it could be a bit hot, that's why we put her in a tank top or a short sleeve shirt.
She has eczema so she is constantly scratching. Even with the sleeves...she sometimes wakes up and takes them off and scratches her hands and feet until she bleeds.
She is the most active kid that I have ever been around, when people meet her for the first time they always comment on how she is non-stop. And she never sweats when she runs around the house.
That's why its so strange.
I'm also always running hot...I am always the first one sweating and the first one to say "Its hot in here". But I found the temp ok last week when I posted this. Yesterday was a bit warm...but we had the AC on. She went to bed with a dry head (even though she was running around the living room and jumping on the sofa) but as she was drinking her bottle she started sweating.
She had on a tank top and her sleeve and a diaper.
But around midnight her head was dry again...but still warm. Her legs and body was cool.
Very strange.

We are still (even though the pediatrician has been telling us for a year now) giving her a bottle 3 times a day. (when she wakes/before nap/before bed) It was 8 oz 3 times a day.
But now its about 5-6oz each time. A bit more if she didn't eat as much at her meal.
I do change her diaper around 1am just to be safe...otherwise her diaper leaks.
> The lotion may be conflicting with her pores and skin development. >
that's an interesting thought...but she has eczema and everyone (including the doctors) always say - LOTION, LOTION, LOTION So we always lotion when she wakes, after washing and before bed - those are the definite times. We also lotion other times when we feel she is a bit dry.
Hasn't help much though, lol.

I think you might be overthinking it --- it might just be the room temp. It might feel fine to you, but maybe it's really warm to her. Just a thought - my DS, like me, runs at like "nuclear reactor level hot" so even in a diaper and AC he can still sweat!

Re: DD gets super sweaty when trying to sleep
Sounds like the room is too warm. DS sweats when he sleeps. It's pretty gross, his hair is soaked when it happens. His Dr said it's nothing to be concerned about and to keep the room cooler, so that's what I do. Teething can also make kids warm. I know DS is getting some molars so he's been warmer then usual.

DD gets super sweaty when trying to sleep
Oh - and we had our first night terror over the weekend (twice in a row in fact) and it was NOTHING like a little moaning or crying from a bad dream. This was full on "call the priest because he is possessed" screaming, crying, running, kicking...he was awake but not consciously...absolutely terrifying. So I don't think she is having terrors like the article suggests.

I agree. We've experienced it a few times and it is so hard to deal with. Screaming and crying at the top of his lungs and completely inconsolable. When a night terror happens, you'll know.

I do change her diaper around 1am just to be safe...otherwise her diaper leaks. Yeah, I would get the drinks in earlier in the day and start to cut back about an hour before bed. If needed, a few sips, but not an entire bottle. The longer you wait at 2 to switch from a bottle the harder it will be. I would switch to a straw zippy cup during the day. She is absolutely old enough for that and a bottle at this age can impair speech development or teeth placement. > The lotion may be conflicting with her pores and skin development. >

We also lotion other times when we feel she is a bit dry. I am not an ex email expert, but you might need a different lotion. What are you using? I went through 6 different creams until I found first aid beauty ultra repair cream. That really helped end my son's exema. He outgrew it. I would call your ped and ask their thoughts. Hasn't help much though, lol.

I mentioned the article to mention that quote...about how young kids don't go from different sleep cycles to other sleep cycles as easily as adults and sometimes they will moan and cry (not night terror)
DD had 2 night terror episodes...she was crying and screaming and woke up and was still crying and screaming. She kept backing away from us and tried to hide under the bed. Only thing that calmed her down was the iphone and youtube - that is like a drug to kids.

LSP2005 >>I am not an ex email expert, but you might need a different lotion. What are you using?
We've tried just about every lotion that's sold in CVS. Cerave/aveeno/some other generic stuff/even prescription lotion (who knew they had prescription moisturizing lotion)
We've seen a few pediatricians/2 allergists/1 dermatologist - going to try some other doctors based on recommendations.

Re: DD gets super sweaty when trying to sleep
Have you had egg or milk allergy testing done? We had the issue with dd that she has a sensitivity to milk and eggs. She is not allergic to them but in excess she gets exema. I wonder if that could be the case or something like it for you too? I would also try the first aid beauty it is at sephora. We went through all available at cvs too. We also went through multiple prescription creams. It was the only thing that worked.

DD was first tested at 6 months with the prick test. We were told her only allergy was to eggs (white and yolk) none to peanuts, walnuts, milk.
She was tested again last month (with a different doctor) and we were told she is not allergic to eggs, but is allergic to walnuts and other tree nuts.
We're going to bring her to another allergist to get a third test and see if the results back up what the previous allergists said.
She has been off milk for about 3 weeks now with no change...but I'm actually thinking, when she first started getting eczema she was getting breast milk so we stopped and switched her to Alimentum which supposedly doesn't have dairy in it. So perhaps its not dairy related...

Re: DD gets super sweaty when trying to sleep
Ok so for my dd it was the same exact situation. Allergy, then none, then allergy, then none, now considered sensitivity. She is now fine with 6 Oz milk, yogurt, and a limited amount of cheese. As for eggs, she can't have just eggs, but they can be a minor ingredient in a larger item. If she has too many eggs she has hives. Her ped is ok with some egg and encourages it so she does not have an allegiance reaction of hives. If we go too long between giving eggs then she can get a reaction. So the ped says to give some eggs as ingredients multiple times a week. I would ask about food sensitivities. Eggs, exema and food sensitivities are common. Hugs.
