Amen to that - instead of worrying about healthcare so much, I wish President Obama would do something about childcare/maternity leave.

Re: daycare vent

I worked for a daycare...Even WITH a discount (not much), after we did the math, it worked out and made more sense for me to become a SAHM.
Day Care teachers don't make much to start with, so, I'd be working to but DS in daycare.
Its Crazy!Chat Icon

Re: daycare vent

I hear you-it is expensive.

There was an article about this in this week's Parade insert.

All about the cost of quality day care, the importance of an early education for kids and the fact that the US is one of the few counties without mandatory paid maternity time and without a nationalized educational program available for infants and toddlers despite studies that show how important it is.

Re: daycare vent

tell me about it! DD is in daycare FT right now and we are paying $1140/month.

I have to switch her daycare center because my office is moving and where she is now is out of the way for my commute. The place she is waitlisted on is $1540/month! Chat Icon

Re: daycare vent

ITA! My DS is with my mom right now, but I plan to put him in daycare in January as I know he will be too much for her when he really starts walking/running around. I am NOT looking forward to spending all this money, especially since I did not get my promotion I was promised this year. I am SUPPOSED to get it next year but not sure when during the year. On top of daycare I ahve to start paying my students loans back too since I just finished my MBA. I think those payments are starting in January too!Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon I have no idea where we are getting all this money from!!!

ETA: DS will most likely go to daycare PT as we just can not afford FT

Re: daycare vent

Daycare is costly. And taking care of a baby/toddler is a lot of work- I agree.
You may want to ask your inlaws if they would be willing to watch your baby 2x a week to help ease the costs or just know that this is something many working parents have to deal with until Kindergarten and just make it work for those years.

Dateline or 20/20 once did a big segment on the fact that sometimes working costs families more money than a parent staying home. You need to have someone help you with the figures but you need to figure out the following:
If you stop working your husband's paycheck may increase due to the tax rate on dependents on his check

Your overall federal/state tax rate can change due to your family overall income level reducing

who carries the benefits and the costs of that need to be considered

can you get a P/T job at night and/or weekends to make some money but not need daycare?

Commute costs- will that reduce if you stay home?

Clothing costs- for some positions you need suits and those are expensive, plus dry cleaning...you may reduce your costs

When these 3 families on the show sat down they realized that staying home would MAKE them money. But, of course, this only applies in limited situations.

Re: daycare vent

I too can relate. Even with the flex plan that I have, the max you can save is $5000. That's not even a half of a year. It's crazy what it costs. We are paying a year of college every year he's in daycare. Truly something needs to be done. Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on how you look at it), I still bring home money after daycare but it's not much.

It's a big number to swallow. If you want to feel better about it, calculate it down to an hourly rate.Chat Icon

My daycare is pretty reasonable - comparatively speaking.

Someone's someone (easier then who it actually is) works in an expensive place - one family has 3 kids, with the discount its almost $3200/month. Makes you wonder how much they make per year to be able to afford that. Its almost 2x my mortgage.

Re: daycare vent

My co-worker is leaving, she has two kids in daycare and it's costing her $35k per year...between that and the stress of working FT and taking care of her kids, her and her husband decided, while it would be tight, it's just not worth it for her to work.

But, don't forget that day care costs are temporary. If you plan to go back into the workforce when the kids are in school you have to think about the ramifications of dropping out for a few years.

You may end up barely breaking even after paying for day care, however if you opt to stay home, you may end up losing earning potential, seniority, flexibility, job skill down the road.

I'm not saying that a person should or shouldn't stay home. However, I do think they should look at the long term plan.
