daycare near work or home?
Ok, here's deal. I work about 20 minutes from home. Do I go with the daycare closest to work (5min from work) or home (10 min from home)?

Re: daycare near work or home?
I like the one closest to my house. I don't like having to drive with DD for long distances- especially in bad weather.
Also- if it snows, or I am sick and want to work from home, I can just drop her off and go back home to work.

Re: daycare near work or home?
If I worked that close to home I don't think it would really matter.
I picked mine close to home. One I work in the city, DH does drop off and we thought about closer to his office (LI) but then decided that there might be days where DS would go to daycare but one of us would be home for things like Drs appts or we are sick. And we wanted to not be driving all the wat to work area to drop off/pick up.

Re: daycare near work or home?
I prefer closer to work. Well my boys go to daycare IN my building. I love it. I love having them in the car with me to and from work. It gives me a little extra time with them each day. And I love that if one of them gets sick, I can get them in a minute.

Re: daycare near work or home?
We do day care near home because DH drops off and goes to work in one direction and I work in the other direction and I pick up.

Re: daycare near work or home?
I would pick closer to home so it's less time DC would have to be in the car.

Good point. The bad weather is the only reason I am so torn! I would rather she not be in the car if it is snowing or icy

That is a great situation! My DH and I work in the same school and the place we are thinking of is only 5 minutes away from there. My afternoon is free so I'm hoping if we go with that place, I can pick her up when I have free time in the afternoon. Also, as I adjust, it would be nice to pop in during a free period to stalk her without her seeing me!

Thanks everyone! I'm still confused and I want to make a decision in the next week. I'm checking out a center near the house tomorrow.

Being that you are so close to work I would just go with a daycare I liked best.

I like it to be close to home.
What if you switch jobs? What if someone else has to pick-up? I also like to cut down on DC being in the car, less chance of them getting in an accident, having to sit in traffic etc.

This!
I always look for something close to the house. AJ falls asleep in a moving vehicle, especially when she was younger. I hated her being cranky and just woken up either at daycare or when we got home.
As she got older it was just easier closer to home so we had time to handle the "I dont want to go" .. "No mommy stay" and other attachment issues.
Now she's past all of that and its just nice we are home in no time and she can get her after school snack and relax.
If she were closer to work we'd have to guess on traffic jams, distance, weather, etc. Plus with her being close to home, both of us or either of us can pick her up.
ETA: also since they are closer to home than work I can run an errand if I need to. Sometimes I need to get stuff for dinner, cat food, or meds for her or god knows how many other million things. I can leave work, run that errand and STILL pick her up up on the way home without dragging her out in bad weather etc.

Re: daycare near work or home?
We send DD to one close to work. Our commute is an average of 45 min from work to home. If something major happened, it would take forever to get to her and I wasn't willing to go through that. The daycare is 6 blocks from the office. It's perfect for us.

Re: daycare near work or home?
Home! She went through a long phase of being impossible in the car after we picked her up so I was grateful it was only a 3 minute drive, not 30 minutes!! Plus, I don't have to worry about her falling asleep in the car so close to bedtime.

Same here. If she was near home, she would be at daycare for 1.5+ hours more per day. As much as I love my daycare, I'd rather have her with me.

HOME! I often put DS in daycare on days off for a short while so I can get stuff done. It's GLORIOUS!

Re: daycare near work or home?
work. i was initially all about finding one close to home, but when he's at daycare we are not AT home. we are at work. my job takes me all over the island, but DH is always at one location. if something were to happen and DS needed to be picked up, or if DH wants to go do a drop by to visit him during lunch and just randomly make sure everything is going ok (which he did in the beginning to make sure our daycare was the right fit), he's just a few minutes away from DS all day long at the daycare we ended up choosing. i realized having DS closer to DH all day was the better choice for us.

Re: daycare near work or home?
Closer to home so on days off (if you're sick or something) it's not a hassle to drop DC off at daycare. My family is also closer then, so in case of an emergency, it would be easier for someone to get her if need be.

Home. The less time DS has to be in the car, the better, especially during wintertime. I dont like taking him on Sunrise Hwy.
