Dairy allergy & transition to milk

How did your doctor suggest you do it? I'm still nursing DS on a dairy/soy free diet and he gets a sippy of Elecare once a day. He's never had any foods containing dairy products yet either. He just turned 1 and is underweight, so the doctor wants us to try him with milk now. She suggested giving an ounce a day in his sippy then slowly increasing it. Does this sound right? I thought she was going to recommend starting with yogurt because the proteins are broken don a little. Did you doctor do allergy testing first? I'm so nervous he's going to have a reaction.

Lauren, even though Sienna is only 5 months, her GI said he is doing blood work at 10 months to see what allergies she actually may have. Did they discuss blood work?

We had DS blood tested (RAST allergy panel) for food allergies around 10 months. That came back showing a severe dairy allergy. We then went to an allergist who did skin testing to confirm. We go back every year for skin tests. They still come back as a severe allergy - and get worse each year even though he's not had any dairy in over 3 years Chat Icon

Our allergist won't let us introduce dairy until his skin tests show slight to no dairy allergy, then we'll do blood testing again to confirm, and then we'll do a challenge test in his office so that if there is a reaction he's there to assist.

Most kids outgrow dairy allergies by 7 years old. Our allergist is hopeful that will be the case for DS, but has warned us that since his is so severe it may not happen for him.

Thanks for the advice. I spoke to the GI doctor and she suggested the same thing. Any other moms have any input? I think Im going to try it tomorrow. My doctor said that I can do it in the office just incase of a severe reaction.

Re: Dairy allergy & transition to milk

Do you know what the allergy is to is it milk or maybe casein? My dd was tested both through bloodwork and skin and both came back neg. to milk. But she cannot drink it or have yogurt or cheese etc. Her GI still thinks there might be a dairy allergy even though she tested negatively. What were the main reasons for thinking it is an allergy? were there any initial reactions? I would be a little apprehensive to give any milk straight up. My dd can handle lactaid and goat's milk. She also plateaued with her weight and started losing because she was vomiting and had diarrhea every day. but since we eliminated milk she has gained about 8 lbs in the last 2 months.
Sorry this doesn't really answer your ?? but actually gave you some to answer... : ) In all of this we learned she has a severe peanut allergy which we would not have known had she not had the reactions to milk and had her tested.

Re: Dairy allergy & transition to milk

Chloe is on 100% elecare only...She is 10 months. I started introducing milk products like cheese, pancakes, french toast, mac and cheese etc....I "thought" she was doing fine....then all hell broke loose. She had a period of like 3 days ( and this was like 3 weeks into introducing these foods in small amounts) where all she did was scream, she couldnt sleep, she cried in pain and she would kinda make like a hard "burp" sound and then SCREAM ...only thing consoling her was rubbing her belly or back constantly.

Her Ped believes in was the build up of the milk products...she was having small amounts so it was damaging and damaging a little more each day till the pain came as her gut was being affected so badly.

So , she sees the GI next week and I'm going to insist on the allergy panel before I introduce any more milk foods and or whole milk.

Good luck.

Let us know what happens. I'd be interested in knowing how it goes.
