Between the growth hormones, antibiotics, and whatever else can get into the milk, I don't see why anyone wouldn't do organic for their children considering how much milk they drink per day! It's just not worth the $1 I'd save.....

While I do buy organic milk for my kids, different things are important to different people. No reason to wonder why some people don't...different strokes for different folks.

Same here. I still get regular milk in my diet since sbux, dunkin and mcd's don't use organic, but I try and drink organic milk whenever possible. However I eat regular cheese and yogurt so I'm not that good  I'm trying to get used to the flavor difference in organic yogurt. I eat yogurt daily so it is my goal to get to organic yogurt by the end of the year. I will start DS on organic yogurt though so he doesn't have to make a taste switch.

DH and I just had this conversation 2 seconds ago! At DD's one year visit if the doctor says we can switch her from formula to milk I want it to be organic. The more I read the stronger I feel about giving her organic milk. I try to buy organic veggies and fruit as well. DD hates any meat so we have no had to deal with that yet.

Milk is not the same as when you were growing up. They weren't putting growth hormone in it. Children are more susceptible to it which is why there are many children going through early puberty!

DH argues this with me all the time, his argument is like this article article
I still prefer Grass Fed Organic Milk.
Here are my problems with this very well written article.
1. Insulin-like growth factor (IGF) is produced naturally, but we don't know what exactly the effect of introducing a foreign processed IGF to the body.
2. "Yet in conventional herds, milk from cows that receive antibiotics is not used until tests show it is antibiotic-free." These tests are done routinely but I believe there has to be a cuttoff, because farms typically do treat animals with low doses of antibiotics when one in the herd gets ill. I don't believe its "antibotic-free" I think its just "antibiotic-less"
3. Pesticides in grain are not broken down by the cow and are transferred in the milk. Better yet, grain feed for animals often has arsenic. In small doses arsenic causes animals to grow faster for unknown reasons.
Not to mention, grass fed organic milk tastes so much different and better. Do a tastes test yourself to see if you notice it. Give it to others.
I buy organic when it makes sense, in this case it makes sense.

it doesn't have a longer shelf life because its organic, it has it because its ultra-pasteurized.
But once opened ultra-pasteurized milk actually doesn't last as long as regular pasteurized milk.
Nothing really to do with organic.

You sound exactly like my husband. Very valid points. you don't know that Shop and Stop is tricking you, but at some point you pick a brand and decide your going to trust them. You don't know they can be putting sawdust in your bread and water in your OJ and totally messing with all the food and you'd never know it.

Believe me, you can tell when fruit/veggies are organic. They don't last half as long as conventional ones. The apples are also easy to tell apart because they aren't shined up with wax. They also usually have a USDA organic sticker on them. I don't know for sure what Stop and Shop does but I do know for certain when I get things from my local organic farm or CSA that are organic.
