crib bumpers, dangerous? are you using one?
So I was trying to find a cute bumper for sheet sets I will get separately and I ran into this about.com article.
This is the first I've heard of this, what do you girls think?

i got a breathable bumper just for this purpose. it matches our bedding and i plan on using it until DC is a bit older and can move around on his/her own.

Did not use it for DS and don't plan to use them for DD either. Basically I think they are a suffocation risk for newborns and then when they can lift their head sufficiently they can then use them to prop up on to get themselves out of the crib. So I don't see a need for them.

Ditto. This info has been around for quite a few years. DS (now 6) didn't have any bumpers because of this risk. DD (now 3) had the breathable bumpers.

We have bumpers in DDs crib because she moves around sooooo much. When she was first moving she used to smack her head on the crib and cry so we put them back in. She doesn't use them to try to climb out and she never sleeps up against them so we don't worry.

we had bumpers with DS and had no issues until he started using them to climb on.
with this DC we will use breathable bumpers.

im using it. will use a sleep positioner so im hoping that will stop him from going near the bumpers. but i also read once they get big enough to climb to take them out.

I used it for DD and found her once with her face and nose smooshed up right against the bumper. I took it off that very day.
With DS, we used the mesh breathable bumpers and it was awesome!

we used them for ds and plan on using them again...
just a side note... sleep positioners are just as much of a risk if not more... i know three friends who had children wiggle down just enough that they found their faces stuffed in the side of the positioner and they are actually not recommended

See my question is are the Breathable Bumpers going to stop the child from hitting their head hard on the side? They look flimsy to me.

No, but it keeps legs and arms from getting stuck thru. I never noticed my son or daughter hitting themselves into the crib hard enough to hurt them. But they have gotten arms and legs stuck at weird angles and my dd even got a bad bruise from it once.

Re: crib bumpers, dangerous? are you using one?
While they make pretty decorations, I am going to get a breathable bumper. I will use the regular one that goes with my set for decorative purposes when she is in a cradle. Once I move her to the crib, no way.

Exactly-I've never had DD hit her head hard enough to hurt herself.
Suffocation is a real risk with those things (add in a sleep positioner and you are basically doubling the risk). I know a lot of people say they've never had a problem, but it only takes 1 time.
The bumpers are so pretty and often complete a bedding set but they are not worth the risk to me. Everyone has to find their own comfort level though.

Re: crib bumpers, dangerous? are you using one?
Also, even if DC's face isn't smooshed into the bumpers, they trap carbon dioxide around DC's face, so it makes it hard for them to breathe. That's also the benefit of fans in the room. You want to keep the air (and oxygen) circulating in the room.

Re: crib bumpers, dangerous? are you using one?
I always used them for DS. IMO for some babies it is safer to use them. DS was rolling very early - he would roll back and forth very fast in the crib and if it wasn't for the bumpers he would probably be repeatedly whacking his head on the hard rails. When he started pulling up to standing (around 8-9 months) he would fall alot and from the same distance as his height and, again, whack his head against the crib bumper. If it wasn't for those bumpers his head would have been repeatedly hit not to mention I am sure limbs would be stuck in the slats.
By the time DS went from the bassinet to the crib (4.5 months) he was well able to lift his head and himself up and roll over. I asked the ped about the bumpers and he said they were TOTALLy fine and if there was a problem DS would just move his head. He still actually sleeps with his face smooshed against the bumpers with no problems whatsoever and he is 2.

DH sleeps with his head smooshed between his pillow and my pillow on top of his face, I have no idea how he breathes under there. I freak out about it all the time.
I keep seeing our kid doing this and I know it will make me a very nervous mommy. I guess I'll just have to see what kind of kid DC will be.
