Costco or BJs

So we will be moving to our new house in October yay!!! We currently shop at whole foods for groceries and I have subscribe and save from Amazon for coffee toilet paper paper towels shampoo etc- do you think that Costco or BJs would be cheaper for these items? And if so which do you prefer? My concern is the grocery end I strictly stick to organic things no hormones etc

Thanks!!

Re: Costco or BJs

We have a Costco membership and we love it. For the $55/year membership it pays for itself a zillion times over. Its great for bulk items like diapers and toilet paper and honestly I find their meats and fish to be excellent quality. We generally stock up and freeze salmon from Costco.

My ILs have a BJ's membership and we were not impressed with their selection.

Costco! The Kirkland Brand is the best. I feel like BJs doesn't have anything special and is just the same as a grocery store but larger quantites

Re: Costco or BJs

I have both. (we are nuts)
But I like BJ's so much better.

1- Express lines- so if you have only a few items that you ran in for, you aren't standing behind people with 2 cartloads of stuff

2- self checkout- amazing

3- they take credit and debit. I believe Costco still only takes Amex and Discover, but I hear they are changing that in 2016. It's about time

4- The BJ's brand- Berkeley and Jensen, blows away Kirkland. I am a huge fan of generic so this is big for me.

5- overall better selection of national brands, etc

6- better meat IMO

We have both too. I think Costco has more "special" and different things, but BJ's is better for the everyday grocery shopping. Plus they take manufacturer coupons and they always have a ton of store coupons in the store and in the monthly book they mail out.

I prefer BJ's for their organic selection. Lots of organic produce, their milk is cheap and frozen veggies too. Also some organic pantry items. I do find that some BJ's are bigger and better stocked than others. Like the new one in Bellport does not carry some things I can get at the one in Garden City (like clothes for DD). Overall I am happy with BJ's. If I need anything from Costco I go with my Mom or ask her to pick it up for me. But it is few and far between.

BJ's - you can double up on the coupons and use manufacturer coupons unlike Costo.

Re: Costco or BJs

we have recently switched from Costco to BJ's. They are both very similar. But what I like about BJ's, they sell the method brand cleaning supplies for much cheaper than Target, but the thing that gets me is Costco is much larger on their items. I don't need 2-4 loaves of bread at once. BJ's had a loaf of bread for cheaper than Stop and shop (same brands) but I only had to buy 1 loaf. BJ's seems to be smaller packaging. But I find similar items in both

Who goes to Costco/BJ's for a few items!?? I always come out with an overflowing cart every.time. Chat Icon

I have Costco. BJ's never carried the times I want.

See if you can a temporary membership to each and see which one you like better.

We do a full cart shopping there like once a month but occasionally we'll be in the area and need a cake, or just a couple of things and we'll run in.

Re: Costco or BJs

FYI, not all stores of the same name are the same. FIL has a BJ's membership for his local store, but when he comes to visit (about 30 minute drive), he sometimes likes to go to our BJ's, because our store has much better variety, selection, etc.

Re: Costco or BJs

my dh and i have done the bjs free 60 day membership. we walk out with next to nothing. costco is our favorite with a membership on and off. i go for unique items and clothes. for grocery items i do better at regular grocery stores and drug stores for toiletries.

Costco!!! Bjs has the worst lines ever and they move slow as hell. The self checkout is useless because no one knows how to use it. I like the selection at Bjs a lot but I can't take the damn lines. Costco is soooo much quicker!!

Costco or BJs

Hmmm I'll have to look into both then. Both are located close to our new house off 347. Does anyone have any feed back on BJS in south setauket or costco in lake grove? I have seen both packed!
Thanks for all the feed back! I think I'm gonna have to try both!

I like the Setuacket BJs a lot.
Bellport is now open and closer to us so we go there, but the Setaucket was always my favorite

And a sista' can coupon the hell out of BJ's too!

This is my favorite BJ's. I've been to a few and always go back to this one. It always has what we need.

We go to BJs in South Setauket and love it. The coupons alone are fantastic.

Re: Costco or BJs

Costco is the better company (how they treat their employees, how they roll over savings to the customers). Their checkout lines are better, and employees a little more responsible. I get pissed off every time I walk into bj's - long lines, employees bs'ing instead of working, etc.

In terms of selection, we have both and go to both becomes there's some things one stocks that another doesn't. We prefer costco in general though, more for the reasons stated above. And I prefer their store brand over bj's

because I am a crazy researcher and love to crunch numbers, I can definitively say that costco has better overall bulk prices than BJ's more most things.

This article is pretty helpful- it compares BJs, Costco and Sam's Club and Costco won in most categories for biggest savings: http://www.businessinsider.com/sams-club-vs-costco-vs-bjs-2013-4

That being said, I personally like BJs more. I feel like it's easier to navigate for some reason, haha
