Cord Blood Banking
This has been such a hard decision for us and we need to make it soon!
What are you ladies doing and why?
I was leaning more towards donating it because everything I read seemed to recommend that if there was no genetic disease that runs in your family.
My husband wants to bank it privately.
So which are you doing and WHY?
And if private where are you banking? Im thinking CSB or Viacord..

Re: Cord Blood Banking
I'm not privately banking. 1.) it's a lot of money for us, and 2.) it's not guaranteed to help your child if needed. I'd rather donate mine, and if my child needs something, wait for a donor that matches.

Re: Cord Blood Banking
I have thought long and hard about this and decided that the greater benefit would be if i were able to donate. There are so many factors that would render the cord blood not helpful in a particular situation. It would stand a much better chance to help a child currently in need vs hoarding it in the unlikely situation we would need it(and it not help us anyways).
Here is an article i just read yesterday about it. http://parenting.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/03/11/there-was-a-lot-of-talk-yester/ Sorry, cant figure out hyperlink on ipad.

This is exactly my thinking...and LIJ accepts donations. I feel this will probably be the best bet for us.

Thanks for posting the article link! It was very interesting!
I've been wrestling with this, too, and had a conversation about it with my doctor just today. The thing that would make me think I would donate it to a public bank, if available, rather than pay to privately store it is that the cord blood would mostly be beneficial for genetic blood diseases - which means that a baby wouldn't be able to use his/her own blood since it would contain the same "bad" blood.
I don't think my hospital participates in the public banking (Good Sam). Does anyone know for sure?

I just looked at the list (it's on the site I posted above), and only 7 hospitals in all of NY are on it. Good Sam was not. But, you can contact the public bank in NY and see if there is anyway you can do it.

Re: Cord Blood Banking
We went with CBR and we are doing it because it's like an extra insurance policy. You never know if you might need it. My uncle is a doctor and he said they might come up with new things to do with cord blood in 10 or 15 years he said he thought it was a really good idea.

We have gone back and forth. I think we are going to private bank it. Yes it is expensive but honestly to me it is an insurance policy. God forbid we need it and we didn't do it I would never forgive myself.

Re: Cord Blood Banking
I am not banking b/c my hospital doesn't accept the donations. I work in the medical malpractice field and spoke with numerous doctors about this. First there is no evidence that frozen cord blood is effective after five or ten years, depending on which doctor you talk to. So even if it might be needed, it might not utilized because it's too old.
Second, cord blood in a majority of cases is a Last resort. Meaning, that there is no other treatment that can be done after cord blood is used.
Mostly becuase of the unability to show it will be effective years from now, we chose not to bank. Frsh is best and that is when it is effective to use cord blood. There is not enough research on frozen.

Here too...I never want to say I should've, could've, would've.
I just got an email from CBR about repairing hearing loss from using the child's own cord blood. There are more and more uses.

Re: Cord Blood Banking
We are donating. I really wanted to bank, however, right now it is a lot for us financially, and as a pp stated, its not guaranteed to help your child. However, if it can help another child that would be wonderful. I also plan on having more children, and will hopefully be able to bank at least one of those. I am also expecting science to develop a lot more in the upcomming years!

Re: Cord Blood Banking
We used Viacord for DS's cord blood. For us it was an extra insurance. Hopefully we never need it, but I don't want to ever wish we did if I chose not to. With DD we just didn't have the money this time. I wish we did.

Re: Cord Blood Banking
I don't think we are, and I don't know if Winthrop does donations. We have two, so it would be expensive! I'm sure it can give parents peace of mind, but I also think it's kind of a scare tactic too. There's just no way of knowing.
I just checked, they don't participate in donating. That's really too bad.

We banked DC 2 and will bank this baby. This way, pretty much, all kids are covered if there is a problem.

Re: Cord Blood Banking
We banked all of our kids' cord blood. For our first child, we went on the advice of my obgyn who was in favor of it. We werent going to do it for the twins, but in the end, we decided to bank their cord bloods too.

this is why we're not privately banking. also it likely can't even be used on the child it came from. in any event we may donate, as our hospital does participate.

I tried to donate, but there was low volume, so there was not enough.
I am sure that I will try to donate again with the next one.
