Cord Blood
We always discuss what we are going to do while we are TTC & Preggers to have / keep DC healthy but has anyone thought about cord blood?
I have, I wish it wasnt so expensive ! For me, personally, its just as important as anything else. I have decided I am already going to start saving up for it now. I lost my sibling to a terminal disease and although core blood would not of helped at the time (stem cells would of ...thank you US Government ). its a safety net that will help me sleep better at night.

Re: Cord Blood
I am definitely going to do this. I have researched the different ones a little just to compare. Once I am pregnant I am going to discuss it more with my doctor and see what she says.

Re: Cord Blood
I am not, but I'd love to donate it to a public cord bank. Unfortunately, my hospital doesn't participate in the public banking. From what I understand, the cord blood could only be used for siblings, not the child themselves. First, I'm not sure we are going to have more than one child. Second, there is actually not a large percentage that siblings are exact matches. I think cord blood companies are preying on parents' worries and are making an obscene amount of money. I'm so thankful I don't know anyone who has had to use cord blood, but I'd love to hear some actual stories, not ads put out by a company. Here is info I found from the donation site, again could be biased, but not sure what a donation site achieves by lying. "However, parents should know that a child's own cord blood (stored at birth), would rarely be suitable for a transplant today. It could not be used at present to treat genetic diseases, for example, because the cord blood stem cells carry the same affected genes and. if transplanted, would confer the same condition to the recipient. (See the story of Anthony Dones.) In addition, most transplant physicians would not use a child's own cord blood to treat leukemia. There are two reasons why the child’s own cord blood is not safe as a transplant source. First, in most cases of childhood leukemia, cells carrying the leukemic mutation are already present at birth and can be demonstrated in the cord blood. Thus, pre-leukemic cells may be given back with the transplant, since there is no effective way to remove them (purge) today. Second, in a child with leukemia, the immune system has already failed to prevent leukemia. Since cord blood from the same child re-establishes the child's own immune system, doctors fear it would have a poor anti-leukemia effect."
Also the AAP (Pediatrics) does not recommend private banking.

ITA with all of this. I have also done a considerable amount of research on the topic and Dh and I have decided if the hospital we deliver at allows public donation we will do that. Hopefully enough people will go this route and should our future LO's need there will be a match somewhere.
