Cooking on the weekend?

Does anyone cook Friday or Saturday evening? I used to always cook before kids and before we bought a house, now we spend an easy $200 on take out every weekend and it’s getting out of hand! I didn’t even realize how much we were ordering out!

Re: Cooking on the weekend?

Hell no.
Friday is take out. Nice treat after cooking and eating the usual suspects all week long.

Saturday night we go out to dinner.
I find it very depressing to sit in the house on a Saturday night and eat a home cooked meal.
That's just me.
I feel like Saturday night is our big night out. And by big night out, I mean a restaurant with our daughter and then home to the couch and TV.

We usually go out to dinner either Fri or Sat, so we cook at home whichever night we don’t go out.

I do. However, I do my grocery shopping on Mondays so by the weekend we're eating leftovers, something from the freezer (chili, lasagna, etc) or easy things like hot dogs, pizza, rice and beans, etc. Some weekends we're out visiting friends or family but we rarely eat out or get takeout.

Re: Cooking on the weekend?

Friday is usually takeout.

Saturday we are usually either out to eat (with or without friends), at a friend’s house, or have friends over. If we don’t have anything going on, I don’t mind hanging at home. We’re always busy doing something and I welcome a night without anything to do.

Not usually. We usually go out, sometimes it’s takeout.

I’m going out tonight (for once) but that has not deterred DH and he and DD are having a dinner date. She requested pizza, turkey and an ice cream cone so good luck to him satisfying all those demands.

This was after I made them chicken cutlets and veggies which are now in the fridge.

DH works late during the week and he loves to cook. So the weekend is usually when we eat in. Take out is usually on a crazy night during the week when myself or DS has work/school events or Cub Scouts.

Almost every Friday we do take out or fast food. Saturdays it's usually something easy we can grill quick like burgers

Pizza some Friday’s but for the most part we stay in and cook. We prefer going out during the week when things are calmer and they have specials. My husband also gets home late from work so now that the weather is nice we bbq on the weekends.

Re: Cooking on the weekend?

When I was married, I went out either Friday or Saturday night to a restauarant.

Nowadays, I have a completely different schedule. I cook during the week for my BF. He’s not here on weekends very often, so I’ll just order takeout, go out with friends, or eat leftovers.

There’s us and 2 kids sometimes we will go out and if we do we get drinks, apps etc. we will order in sometimes Mexican, pizza, and we always get a salad with the pizza, Greek. It’s not always $200 but many weekends close to it! I guess it depends on the weekend. We don’t eat fast food, the last time I was at a McDonald’s or something like that was in college.

I don’t think it’s bad at all. You do you. I just do home-cooked meals because I do like cooking, and it saves money. I also like to do a complicated meal once a week or so because it’s therapeutic.

Then again, you are talking to someone who just ordered a ton of take out for dinner tonight Chat Icon .

So in terms of saving money, I actually find that given the things I cook, it doesn't cost all that much more for takeout or a restaurant. For example, the other day I made spinach artichoke chicken and prosciutto wrapped asparagus. Probably cost $30-$35 for the ingredients. We could have spent $40 and gone to a casual restaurant. I don't like leftovers, so we're not getting a second dinner out of anything (DH will bring leftovers for lunch the next day).

I guess it depends on what you cook. During the week, I order Hello Fresh (it’s cheaper here). That give me three meals (2 people) and then I will do another 1-2 meals. I like to usually do a protein with veg. I like to get good quality fish, steak, chicken, etc. That is much cheaper than going out for a steak / fish dinner.

I also make a list and try to incorporate the ingredients for the week. So if I make a side of spinach (or whatever is in season), I make that a few times during the week. It always works out to be cheaper than takeout or restaurants for me. I don’t care for really fast food, but that is just me. Maybe it just depends on what kind of takeout you get?

Cooking on the weekend?

We used to eat every meal out on weekends. Trying to save money so I have been crock potting as much as we can. Tonight I baked salmon and shrimp with asparagus and cilantro rice. Since we don’t want to get bored I’m trying to be creative with meals. Since the weather is nice we will grilling a lot more now.
