Constipation in 3 week old?
We changed her formula about 4 days ago due to gas issues and now it seems she is constipated. Are there any remedies for a baby this young?
TIA!

Has it been the whole 4 days? Sometimes they just need to adjust. Does she seem uncomfortable?

Re: Constipation in 3 week old?
Is she really constipated (hard balled up poops)? Or is she arching her back and grunting when trying to have a BM? Newborns go through a stage when after their stomach fills it triggers a reflex to poop. Many newborns struggle to coordinate relaxing their anal sphincter and contracting the muscles of their intestines in order to successfull pass their poop. Sometimes bicycling their legs or gentle massage following along the path of the large intestine will help them.

This. Newborns just dont go sometimes. It's not true constipation unless it's hard and stuck and they can't push it out.
Sometimes rubbing in a circular motion right under the belly button helps. As well as bicycle legs and pushing the legs up toward the belly kinda like when you squat.
Another trick is pushing the tip of the thermometer in and move it around a tiny bit with Vaseline on it, usually helps things moving. But that's last, very last resort haha.
A warm bath will help relax the muscles as well. Just watch that she doesn't poop in the tub. Hahs

It has literally just been 4 days as of this afternoon. She is very uncomfortable...she pushes and pushes, red faced and crying/screaming.

The poop is like a play dough consistency. It's not super hard but it's not the mushy stuff she started off with.

Hahaha...we actually made her Aunt Allyson do the thermometer trick last night. LOL. We are such whimps :)
Thanks for the responses...we'll give the massage and bath a try :)

Re: Constipation in 3 week old?
My DS was constipated in the beginning and the ped told me to mix 1 oz of prune juice with 1 oz water and give him that. He said we could give it like 3 times a day until he wasn't constipated anymore or if it didn't work within a day or 2 to call him back and he would give us something else. We used the prune juice twice and it worked!

Re: Constipation in 3 week old?
Thank goodness for Aunt Allyson's haha. I hated doing it too.
We had to do prune juice as well in the begining but talk to your ped about that. She may just be getting used to the new formula so it might help her go and hopefully get regular after that.
She's still trying to figure out how o work everything. ;)
Play dough consistency is also. Kemal after a few weeks. The seedy poop does end after they are a few weeks old. As long as it is not hard balls I think you are ok and she's just trying to poop.
