Re: Constipation in a 5 week old..what can I give?
My DS was constipated when he was that young. We were told to try a little bit of prune juice but that made him gassy. Then both my Ped and my GI doc suggested Dark Karo Syrup. At 1st I was a bit apprehensive bc it was sugar, etc etc but it worked like a charm. We gave him 1 tsp in 1 bottle per day but the ped/gi said I could do 2-3 tsp in several bottles. To just play around with it until I saw what worked. The 1 tsp worked really really well. We did that every day for a little while until he worked everything out himself. He's a great pooper now!

Re: Constipation in a 5 week old..what can I give?
I've heard prune juice does work (as stated in PP) and my girlfriend used glycerin suppositories on her baby when she wouldn't pass a BM on her own. I've heard mixed things on using the suppositories, but I don't personally have any experiences with this (My DS poops way too often in my opinion since I'm always changing the diapers lol).
You could also try gripewater or mylicon too. I would suggest talking to your pediatrician before actually trying anything. I hope this helps!

Re: Constipation in a 5 week old..what can I give?
i tried this and it worked (pediatrician said it was fine too)
take a Q-tip and cover the swab with some vaseline (others prefer a water soluble lubricant like KY) ONLY put the swab in the booty and swirl it around GENTLY.
i did this and DS filled 2 diapers. I tried it after i read it online from several parents and after i saw my son poop after i took him to the hospital bc he was sooooo fussy and unconsolable...the nurse stuck the thermometer in and when she took it out he had a poop-a-thon! I realized then that his problem was constipation and started looking it up so i never have to have another hysterical night like that again!
if you think gas is a factor I recommend Gripe water, its all natural and I feel it worked for my son...even more than the "little tummies"

thanks..I've done the thermometer trick in the past with DD1 I just have heard that you shouldn't do it too much with such a young one bc they can get used to it and not poop on their own....

Same thing happened to Brayden. Did the thermometer trick. Don't do it too much, but once in a while if needed is fine. My Ped also suggested pear juice, he said it's better than prune. He said 2 oz of the juice and an oz of water, but I'd didnt have to do it

Make fennel tea--it's an old family remedy that works really well :)
Boil 8 oz. of water with about 8 fennel seeds. Let it simmer about 30 minutes. Add a little bit of sugar to it. Let cool a bit and put it in a bottle.
I promise, it works better than anything we've ever tried--prunes, thermometers...it works wonders.
