Conceiving during or after being on medication
My husband is taking the medication Lamisil orally for a fungus infection on his nail gross i know!
For this medication he had to get bloodwork to check his liver function and years ago he took Accutane - same deal. I know Accutane it says do not get pregnant especially if you are a woman and taking it. I think Lamisil might have the same warning.
When DH was prescribed the Lamisil we asked about TTC. The doctor said that it's ok to TTC b/c DH is taking the medicine not me. We decided that we are NOT going to TTC until DH is off the medication just to be safe. The doctor also told us that Lamisil stays in your system for months after you stop taking it and it keeps working - now that makes me nervous b/c to me it's as if he were still taking the medication.
I know she said not to worry (but it also seemed like she was unsure when she answered - her answer didn't seem 100% confident - or maybe I am just paranoid ) but I don't know, I rather both of us be 100% medication free when we TTC.
I tried looking info up online but couldn't really find anything.
DH has about a months worth of pills left and I am starting my last pack of BC in a few days. After that I am stopping birth control and DH will be off the medication. We aren't going to try until Nov/Dec but if something happened before then we would be okay with it - but the whole medication thing freaks me out a bit.
Should I ask another doctor if it's safe? My midwife? I think I am going to call just to be safe.
Has anyone been in a simialir situation regarding medication before TTC or during TTC? Is it different if the man is taking the medication?
I know that there have to be couples on meds having children between allergies, depression, anxiety, blood pressure, cholesterol, etc. I could go on and on but I don't want to be negligent and if we have to wait we'll wait.
I guess I am just a nervous pre TTC'er
Thanks for reading!

When DH was prescribed the Lamisil we asked about TTC. The doctor said that it's ok to TTC b/c DH is taking the medicine not me.
But is it like Accutane or not? That's the main question, do you NEED to wait x amt of mths after taking the meds? Even if it's DH taking it, sperm can mutate and are subject to the same concerns as women. I would personally not chance it. I would read what it says and if it says wait x amt of mths to Ttc, then that is what I would do. Or I would wait, on my own, for at least a few mths.
The only other ? I have is maybe it's different than Accutane, and therefore if it's not an issue since it would be more so if the person taking it was actually carrying the baby. You should be able to find this info out. Even call that company who makes the Lamisil.

Re: Conceiving during or after being on medication
DH was on accutane years ago we have 2 healthy kids so I wouldn' worry about that. as for the other meds, I would just wait until he is done with them then TTC, I wouldn't take any chances

Re: Conceiving during or after being on medication
In addition, you need to know all the facts here. Sperm take about 3 mths to develop and mature, so the sperm that your DH has today was actually being "made" 3 mths ago....so that's why it matters how long you need to wait.

Re: Conceiving during or after being on medication
it's not the same as accutane
For accutane I know women have to get monthly Betas to make sure theyre not preggo before it's prescribed. It is not the same with lamisil

Re: Conceiving during or after being on medication
this is what i found
Lamisil is considered a pregnancy Category B medication. This means that Lamisil is probably safe for use during pregnancy. However, using the drug during pregnancy is not recommended, since the full risks are not known and the treatment of nail fungus can be postponed until after pregnancy. Be sure to discuss the possible risks with your healthcare provider before using Lamisil during pregnancy.

But that is for the woman taking it during PG. Her DH is taking it.
I don't see how it is a problem at all. Your DH can drink during TTC and PG and it doesn't matter.
I say go for it! There is always an 'excuse' not to.

Re: Conceiving during or after being on medication
YES, but if it is safe for her to take while pregnant, then why wouldn't it be safe for him to take. It was just a little info I found and wanted to share. hmph
None of us are doctors though.

Re: Conceiving during or after being on medication
Well I already knew it was a Category B drug - but that doesn't really give much info - I read it as them saying it's probably safe but since they aren't sure yet it's better to not get pregnant while taking it. That makes me a little nervous and I can't find anything regarding a man taking it and impregnating a woman - unless the pregnancy thing is the same risk for women and men?
We are not going to TTC while DH is still on the medication. My biggest concern is how long to wait after he is done with the medication because the doctor said it stays in your system for I think up to 6 months and keeps working to fight the fungus infection. So is there still a risk even after he stops taking the pills? Or was there no risk to begin with even while he was on them? I can't really find a clear answer.
Does anyone know any other medicines that are category B?
