Comprehension level of a 20 month old

I can't get over how much DD understands it's crazy, she literally understands everything where we are starting to spell out words so she doesn't understand...BUT she's still not putting too many words together to put....she'll say I want that, or what's that etc....
cause for concern???

Shane was/is the SAME way. Sometimes I just say random things and think "he'll never know what I'm talking about" Lo and behold he DOES!!!! Totally freaks me out since he's speech delayed, so I think I'm underestimating his skillzzzzz Chat Icon
But if chels is speaking in 2word sentences I have to think she's at or ahead of normal development milestones????

I don't know, bc the sentences she's saying are learned as sentences and not as sep words if you KWIM....and she still relies a lot on "this, this this" for everything....I'll repeat the word for over and over and she'll still say this

Re: Comprehension level of a 20 month old

I really really think she's on target, but if you think she's behind why not get the evaluation?? HOnestly the process is SO easy, ours was completed 10 days after my first phone call to get the ball rolling. Even if she doesn't qualify for services at least you'll have an objective assessment of where she's at!

My close friend is an evaluator actually, and has been around her and said she's more than fine...I don't know why I just worry that she's not picking up words fast enough...it's just that she choses to use the same words over and over

OK if your friend says she's OK I'd stick with that. There's just so much going on in these toddler brains, it can be a little overwhelming!!! Relax Jen she's PERFECT. i know it's a little frustrating but keep using words and labelling EVERYTHING, as I understand it most kids her age are building up to a "word explosion' around 24 months!!!

I know you're right, I think I'm just slowly losing my mind bc of everything going on...so why not add just one more thing to worry about...

Re: Comprehension level of a 20 month old

We were at a dr's appt at 20 months and my DH aske the dr if we should be concerned that she was only putting together 2-3 words...sometimes. The dr said no way, we'll talk again at her 2 year well visit.

She will be 2 on the 29th and in 4 months you can now have a full blown conversation with her, she uses prepositional phrases, etc it's incredible how fast it happens!!!!

I would tell anyone, do NOT even give it a second thought till they're 2. Chat Icon

Re: Comprehension level of a 20 month old

Yep around 18-20mo we started to seriously censor our words. We usually substitute things like her last bottle is the 'night cap' and only say it to each other, never say to HER "do you want your night cap"Chat Icon

we've also been spelling J-U-I-C-E or just call it "J" "do you have a few J's for the road"

Milk is spelt or called 'the white stuff' and or "Cow's Love" haha

Fun stuff!
