comforter or duvet cover?
i've only ever had comforters, and i know they are a PITA to clean.
obviously duvet covers would be easier to clean but do they hold up as well? and are they super expensive? i'd like to invest in a great down comforter and be able to replace the covers as i wanted/needed.
and OMG are down comforters always so expensive??
any info would be great! TIA!

Re: comforter or duvet cover?
Ive had both and both times I wanted to throw my duvets out the window bc I was constantly readjusting them. The comforter insert would slip around inside and then get all bunched up or the seam of the duvet would end up down the center.

Re: comforter or duvet cover?
i had a duvet for the last few years before i got married and i did love the fact that i had a few different ones to change with the seasons, etc. i agree with the PP that they do tend to shift a lot and can be a pain, but if you don't mind that, then they are nice to change and brighten up the room!

Re: comforter or duvet cover?
You can purchase duvet covers that have ties on the inside corners (Pottery Barn has some) or you can use large safety pins to secure the comforter to the inside corners. I've heard people do this but I never have. I just shake the duvet to get the top of the comforter to top of the duvet. Other than that they stay in place on the sides and bottom.

Re: comforter or duvet cover?
I'm a strictly duvet cover girl. I have one for just about every month of the year!
I don't really see any drawbacks to them, they're easy to clean, easy to take on and off (once you get used to it), and sleeping with a down comforter is oh so comfy...
as far as shifting goes, the only thing I notice is the corners aren't always right where they should be, but it's not noticeable unless you feel for where they are.
Overstock and the Company Store sometimes have good prices on down comforters. I got a really good one from Fortunoff five years ago and it's still in perfect condition, so it might be worth it to invest some money into a higher quality comforter.

Re: comforter or duvet cover?
Macy's usually has sales on duvet covers. I got a queen-size for $60.
I luv duvets---I like to change the cover each month. Ikea has duvet covers super cheap. Some are $20.

Re: comforter or duvet cover?
Ikea has decent prices on down comforters. I've had mine for 3+ years and I think I only paid about $80 for it (it's queen size). I agree with PPs that said the comforter usually shifts within the duvet. I bought these plastic things that go on the inside of the duvet to hold the comforter in place, and the newest duvet I bought has the ties in it, like someone previously mentioned.

Re: comforter or duvet cover?
I bought a duvet from overstock for our guestbedroom, I don't mind it b/c I don't sleep with it, however, when we had guests over and I made the bed the next day, I wanted to throw the damn thing out the window!!! haha I do love the actual duvet itself and for the once in awhile it annoys me it's totally worth it to me in a guest room.....everyday use, no way.
I bought the honey one for $40 bucks, much cheaper then buying a new set:

Re: comforter or duvet cover?
LB I am *strictly* duvet girl these days. I used to love comforters but geez, storing those babies is a freakin nightmare. Also for a good down comforter insert, try Costco, the one near me in LIC usually has a great selection, I got one 2 years ago and it's AWESOME.
My next tip is duvet clips!!!!
They'll keep the comforter in place PERFECTLY, you can get 'em at BBB!!

Re: comforter or duvet cover?
Love the comforter look... hate storing them and feel "stuck" in one pattern. I have so many comforters over the years, it's insane!
So I do duvets. You can wash the covers, you can change them when you feel like a different color/pattern. I have 2 different size duvets (ligher and warmer) and duvet covers.
I am now a duvet girl.
