Colds and Feeding (Advice wanted)
Abby has a cold. We took her to the pediatrician. Nothing in her ears or chest. She has a post nasal drip and is coughing. Her nose is running. No fever. Her appetite (which is NEVER great) is "eh" for her but she has been on a limited BRAT diet since she threw up a couple of times a few days ago. We know its the mucus from the drip that is making this happen. She is losing nutrition because I haven't been giving her milk and she is rejecting Pedialyte.
My question is, if her lungs are clear, and it is post nasal drip, when can I start giving her milk again? Lord knows she can be coughing like this for days. I don't want her to lose weight - she needs the calories.
TIA

I would give her milk and liberally use saline drops(you don't have to aspirate-it will thin the mucous out)

Leslie I don't know if your ped will okay this, but our ped told us to give Luca Benadryl to dry up the mucus. We have been able to give him milk with no problems (so far).
Hope Abby is back on her feet soon

Re: Colds and Feeding (Advice wanted)
DS has had a cold for the last 4 out of 5 weeks.
He really wasn't eating and didn't want much to do with his milk but we did give him his bottle in the morning because he is kinda dependant on his morning bottle for soothing. I figured it was a small enough amount, he needed his nutrition and he wanted it so why not give him a little.
I don't know if Abby eats mozarella sticks but I gave those to DS also so he could have some dairy without the coating phlegmy affect of milk.
If her lungs are clear and it's just post nasal drip in her nose, I see no problem with giving her milk.
I hope she gets better soon.

My ped also told me to try pediasure for DD. DD does not eat well on her best days and when she is sick never wants to eat. If it wasn't for her chocolate milk (pediasure) the last few days, she would have no nutrition in her.
It did make her stool a little darker but ped said that is normal.
