cold cuts

I just ate a salami and provolone sandwich, and although I enjoyed it, I am now feeling guilty and paranoid about eating it. Chat Icon

I know how you feel. I am dying for a turkey and cheese sandwich but refuse to eat one. I have a feeling I will cave before this baby is born.
But I have eaten tunafish twice and little pepperoni from cheese platters and I feel guilty after eating it. You're not alone!

Re: cold cuts

Why? I have cold cuts several times a week. I work PT and the best and easiest things for me on the go is to make a turkey and cheese sandwich and bring it with me! As long as you are buying them from a reputable place, I don't get the issue with cold cuts!?

Re: cold cuts

Cold cuts contain nitrates and bacteria... I wont eat them due at of my own feelings of being cautios and my dr did tell me ONLY if i really have a craving for them but heat them up first.
I do crave some honey roasted turkey but not enough that it would outweigh the guilt... I would feel way too guilty so im just avoiding them.

I would be careful about eating it a few days a week. That might be a bit excessive. You may want to speak with your dr... I do not mean that in any way rude each person is different and ive noticed drs give different women different advice due to a patients personal history...

I've had cold cuts a few times a week since I found out I was pregnant. I do not heat them up and I enjoy every bite. So far I've had a healthy pregnancy and anticipate a healthy baby.

Yeah, its actually on my list of things I can't eat. Clearly says NO cold cuts. So many doctors say different things though. I can't wait to get some subway. What bummed me out was when I heard that I can't eat it if BFing.

I eat cold cuts a few times a week. My OB said as long as the place is reputable and the meat is moving off the shelf fairly quickly it's okay. You could drive yourself nuts if you avoid every possible bacteria source. Just stay away from raw foods and possibly tuna fish (high levels of mercury) and you'll be fine.

I am not sure where you got that info but there are no diet restrictions while BFing unless your child has an allergy.

As far as the deli meat I think eating in moderation from a reputable place is fine. Because of this thread DH is actually out getting me stuff for a turkey and cheese sandwich now. Chat Icon

Re: cold cuts

I ate them & tuna at least once a week during my first pregnancy. No issues whatsoever.

The only reason why I haven't had any during this pregnancy is because I can't even stomach the thought of them, and most other foods for that matter. Otherwise I would have eaten up!

My dr said everything in moderation is okay. Just don't go to the dirty bodega on the corner. If you go to the grocery store where the products are maintained at the proper temperature and is being used & replaced often, you are okay.

Besides, you wouldn't be eating much of anything if you worried about EVERYTHING you could get listeria/bacteria/nitrates from. We're talking salads, fruits & vegetables, etc.

And I find it quite funny when people say they refuse to eat coldcuts or tuna because of the listeria and bacteria, but head to McDonalds to eat the food there.

To each his own.

It's fine!!! I've never heard of it being on a NO list! I know people who have had their entire pregnancy and their children are fine. I ate turkey with my DD & I've had this pregnancy too. Everything in moderation. My doctor has no issues with it...just have to make sure it's from a clean deli where the food moves. As the pp said one sandwich is fine Chat Icon

Quite a few people have actually told me that the cold cuts and sushi would still be off limits if I BF. Kind of makes sense considering you're passing what you're eating to the baby. We don't drink alcohol then BF so I trust their advise. I will ask my dr.

Yeah I don't go to mcdonalds either. I've been there once since pg. I'm very cautious too. I follow whatever the dr says. As for the tuna though I'm allowed 1 can a week of chunk light but have even restricted myself from eating it that often.
I guess we all just have to do what we're comfortable with. If you're going to feel guilty about it and let it bother you then I would say don't eat it. I listen to my own body and feelings about it. All other family opinions I've brushed off the best I can. It's our body, our baby, and why put someone down for doing what they feel is best? With that said I'm still not eating cold cuts. I've held out this long. I can go for 9 more weeks. Chat Icon

They are wrong. Here is one of many links from a reputable source. I agree you should ask your Dr. these things because whoever told you that is misinformed.

Ets: The reason alcohol will affect the baby is because it is in your blood stream. Breastmilk is made from what goes into your blood not your digestive tract or stomach. That is why you can eat whatever you want. The food does not enter our bloodstream. The only thing I did not eat was certain types of fish due to high levels of mercury which can get into your blood.

Most drs will tell you to avoid them if you can .
I never ate cold cuts, sushi. Only had well done meat and even though I craved soft cheese all the time with my previous pregnancy I tried to eat only very little and only when I had really bad craving , but I made sure it was pasteurized.
And when it comes to BF I tried to eat healthy but didn't really avoid anything other than coffee, alcohol and sushi (since it's raw and I didn't want to risk anything) My dr knew this and she was fine with it. She told me I could eat anything, just avoid alcohol.

Nitrates in general are just bad for you, but I've never heard that regarding BFing and sushi. My dr always says everything in moderation. If its nitrates your concerned about you can always get nitrate free cold cuts.

I have never heard this before. You can eat almost anything while BFing as long as your DC doesn't have a sensitivity to it. Things don't pass as easily in BM as they do across the placenta. You can also drink while BFing( in moderation of course). If you are able to drive a car you are ok to BF.

Me neither. My ped (who is also a certified LC) said I could resume my normal diet when I was BFing DS (alcohol in moderation as the PP stated). To the poster/s who heard differently, I would double check with either your pediatrician or the LC on staff at the hospital. Why deny yourself a turkey sandwich or spicy tuna roll if you don't have to? Chat Icon

Re: cold cuts

Don't feel bad! Enjoy!! I eat cold cuts a few times a week and did with both of my other pregnancies as well. Out of the 5 OB's I have seen (2 in the practice I went to with DS and the 3 in the practice I go to now) NONE of them have ever told me not to eat cold cuts. As long as you go somewhere reputable there should be no problem. In fact the most recent listeria and salmonella outbreaks all came from fruits and vegetables and I'm sure no one is going to stop eating all fruits and veggies.
