My Dr said you can have 200mg of caffeine a day.....I may go over this slightly....does anyone else drink coffee? I don't know whether I should just bag it all together, although I do love the cup in the morning!

Coffee/Caffeine

I skip it totally, I switched to decaf about a month before getting my BFP and haven't looked back, just makes me too nervous. But a lot of women on here drink that cup a day, some more than that.

Its a personal choice. My doctor said I can have up to 220mg a day. I rarely drank coffee before, so I don't really drink it now…but I do randomly have iced teas which have caffeine and don't think about it twice.

Why are you wary of decaf?

Because of the processes that are used to make the coffee decaffinated (certain chemical solvents). Not all brands, but many. I don't need coffee just for the taste of it, so I'd rather avoid drinking something that has been processed, and wait until I feel comfortable drinking caffeine. I also don't drink soda (diet or otherwise). Just a personal preference!

I'm the same way, I'm perfectly fine avoiding it for another 5 months or so.

Coffee/Caffeine

I drank one cup a day throughout my last pregnancy and so far through this pregnancy.
On occasion will have an iced tea if we go out to dinner.

Coffee/Caffeine

I have one cup a day plus usually a soda.
I work ft with a toddler and I'm exhausted.
I'm not sure if I go over or not but I think it's ok.

Re: Coffee/Caffeine

I thought giving up coffee would be the hardest thing to do, so I switched to decaf and honestly did not love the taste of it... knowing I can't have regular only decaf made me not want coffee at all which is strange for someone who needed 2-3 cups a day. Now I will only have the iced decaf from DD like once a week if that. But I've known people who drank regular coffee throughout their pregnancy (talking like 3-4 cups a day) and their kids have no known issues even 7-8 years later. ..

I have my cup of regular coffee going in to the city every day. Some days I'll get another cup of decaf...other days I'll have a soda or another cup of regular. I've broken the one cup a day rule so so so many times.

I think it's more a concern about increased risk of MC, at least that's what it is for me. Many studies have shown that women who ingest higher amounts of caffeine (200mcg was the limit) have increased risk of MC. That's why I steer clear - though I will have a piece of chocolate or a chocolate milk (I HATE the taste of plain milk and know I need my dairy).

Re: Coffee/Caffeine

I was ordered to have a cup a day by my OB due to my kidney stones. He wanted me to keep my urine moving and caffeine is a good diuretic.

I look at it as if he is TELLING me to drink it how bad can it be?

First tri I was turned off to coffee so I drank caffeinated tea or iced tea.
Once my aversions went away I had a cup a day. Sometimes, I'd have 2 small cups a day.

I had them all my life- well from 2 weeks before my wedding- my first attack.
Dr said pregnancy can make them worse or cause attacks because your urine tends to sit in your kidneys longer and form more stones.
Hence why he wanted me on the caffeine daily as a diuretic.
LUCKILY no attacks while pregnant. I can't imagine having to deal with an attack and not be able to take narcotic pain killers.

The upside, labor pains were NOTHING compared to a kidney stone. Seriously.
I got to the hospital at 4-5 cm and the dr was shocked I was as comfortable as I was. I told him these contractions were NOTHING compared to a kidney stone!

I was too sick to drink it for the first 15 or so weeks. Now I drink it in moderation. I agree that the little amount of caffeine is better than the chemicals is decaf- though I will drink decaf very rarely. You have to do what you feel comfortable with.

I drink 1-2 cans of soda a day and continued to do so while I was pregnant. I stayed way below the recommended 200mg limit. I'm not much of a coffee drinker but definitely had some Starbucks every now and then.

Early on I just don't enjoy it and am happy to skip it for a while. Once I hit around 12 weeks I'm back to a cup a day.
