Yup, we'll have a ton, we charge everything on our cash back and rewards credit cards and then pay it all off when it's due. Might as well make SOMETHING off all of that shopping Chat Icon

Re: Christmas Bills

How much are people spending??

I guess it depends on how many people you buy for but I only spent around $1,000-$1,200 total.

So I didn't have a problem paying - paid in cash as I went.

Six adults
Six children.

Me too! Love my credit card rewards! I only charge what I can pay for in full. I just charge to get the points and I don't have time to go to ATM, LOL!

It is the opposite for me. This is the first year ever that we will have bills that will take a few months to pay off. It was inevitable - had an expense filled year and while I would have liked to have cut down on holiday gifts, its very hard to do so with a large family that gives you gifts and expects gifts in return and would not agree to a no gift policy. It is what it is.

Same goes for me.

I was thinking of doing a poll for this lol.

Everything should be paid off in January when the bill is due. I had about 25-30 people that I had to get at least a little something for so I spent over $2k this holiday season.

Re: Christmas Bills

I put mostly everything on my Amex, some of which was paid off from last month balance in full and the recent charges will be paying off in full next week.

We spent at least $2500

Re: Christmas Bills

We pay everything off on the credit card each month. There isn't any other option here. There is no minimum balance or pay half or whatever. You have to pay the full balance each month. You could ask the bank, but it just makes for more work, so we don't do that.

Christmas Bills

I use one credit card for everything so I can rack up points and I pay it off the same month. I rarely use a store card.
I use the points for airfare since we travel at least once a year by plane. It's great because I always wind up getting at least 1 or 1.5 seats free. This year we redid our kitchen so when I buy my airfare in a couple months I am pretty sure it will all be free with the points I have saved since our last trip!!

I paid little by little as a bought stuff.
I didn't spend a ton so although I have been getting cc bills, I will just pay them off the same as usual.

I think many people do but not quick to share publicly.

But yeah, I will. A little bit. Nothing too nuts. It is what it's and life goes on.

It seriously annoys me that NOBODY will admit it on here. I give a truly sincere pat on the back to those ladies who are paying off their bills every month..but there's NO WAY they are "the norm". I own my own home on Long Island where it's incredibly expensive to live, I make what I consider a mediocre salary, I have almost 20 kids to buy for for Christmas...of course I have bills after Christmas and I have no issue admitting that. They won't put me in the poor house...but they exist. Chat Icon

I'm with you...a lot of things I paid on my debit card but I have no problem carrying debt on my credit card. Over $700 alone went to Christmas gifts between my son and friends kids and my SO's daughters. Idc. It is what it is and the world isn't going to end because Christmas isn't paid for yet lol

If i had bills, I'd admit it. I don't see the shame in it.
I wouldn't lie about it.
I just don't. I'm fortunate, I get it. Maybe it's not the norm. I don't know. I only know about my own situation
But I don't think it's right to say that everyone who said they don't have bills and debt after Christmas is lying or won't admit it.

Agreed. Trust me, I have medical bills for days. Between childbirth, my sons hospitalization at 3 weeks old and his PT sessions I am on payment plans until 2017. It just so happens that since I did the money challenge and my ILs gave us money for Christmas so I don't have lingering Christmas related bills. In every other aspect I'm swimming in bills though!

I paid cash for everything because we don't use credit cards, but we pulled from our savings to do so...that basically means that we will be "paying back" our savings for the next few months. Those are basically my "Christmas bills".

Yes, I agree also.

I was being honest -- but I also didn't spend tons of money on Christmas either otherwise maybe I wouldn't have been able to just debit it. But I've never been a big credit card person - they scare me. I tend to only keep one for an extreme emergency.

I have loans though - I mean, I have a car loan. I have student loans. Does that make anyone feel better? lol! There's some debt! And if I have it, I admit it. It's nothing to be ashamed of.

I don't even know why people are interested in if other people having bills or not? Does it make them feel better if they see others have bills and they do not? I honestly never ask my friends about their financial situations and they never ask me about mine. I wouldn't want to know either unless they were in need of help.

I didn't answer because it's nobody's business but my own. In my opinion, people share way too many personal details on a public website. If they are comfortable with that, that's fine but just not my style at all.

Re: Christmas Bills

I could never ever be on board to spend money I don't have, ever.

There is a myth that the holidays are not the holidays unless there are tons of presents under the tree for everyone. The marketing of Christmas has become so extreme that people go into REAL debt just to buy gifts for everyone. Both Chanukkah and Xmas.

Whereas my sister (who is not Jewish) was basically on food stamps and had gifts and bought shit all the time. Lost her house car etc. She ALWAYS had ipads, TV's the best gadgets. There was nothing she could afford or pay back. I hope the holidays they had and the ipads made up for loosing their house.

My best friends family, on the "outside" was the perfect family. TONS of gifts under the tree, big family parties etc etc. Bankrupt. Lost their house. MASSIVE CC debt and ended up renting a small 1 bedroom apartment because they lost everything.

The commercialism that surrounds the holidays that makes people think they have to go into debt for a good holiday makes me very sad.

I think about these kinds of stories and edit what I purchase.

My cc bill is $2k. That includes more "regular' stuff than holiday, since my holiday was over 2 week ago. This bill will be paid by Feb.

I agree. I choose to live within my means which is why I can pay my CC off every month. It also helps that we do not carry any student loans. When we bought our house we made sure everything was paid off. We had a good amount in savings so our mortgage was affordable for us, we only have 1 car payment since the other is paid off, and I do not need to keep up with the joneses. I do not go for monthly hair appts, I do not get my mails done on a regular basis, I shop clearance racks for clothes, and come holiday time, I do not spend what we can't afford.

This is not to say that anyone who has bills lives above their means, this is just the way I live and budget our household. I do budget down to the penny, and make sure I save before I buy. My mom was this way too, and I learned from her I guess.
