I think that we use it because we saw someone else use who saw someone else etc.. I mean I dont know where I got it from and I have used it, so obviously I didnt make it up, I got it from someone, and that person got it from someone and so on...SO I think the original person knew what they were doing with the X is X-mas, we just use it as an abbreviation.
Relgion is a personal thing so I would feel bad if I offended anyone by using it, although to me it doesnt bother me.
It is great to know the origins though, ya kearn something new aeveryday huh 
I use it sometimes when I am lazy

I guess I dont understand being offended about thing like that... lets not forget that Christmas comes from pagan festivals and had nothing to do with religion...
