Christmas / XMas
Ok so as not to hijack the other thread...I'm not sure why people are saying it's a religious thing to prefer Christmas over Xmas.
Maybe they don't realize that Xmas started because the "x" refers to christ ("X" is a symbol for Christ, from the Greek letter chi (X). ). Xmas has been used for hundreds of years in religious writing.
Also, the VERY religious don't write/type out "Christ" or "God", hence G-d.
Signed- the Heretic Definitely going to hell for using both Christ & God in this post...

I noticed that in my other thread too. Honestly, I think everyone should do what THEY are comfortable with. We all know what either way means.

I actually thought I was doing something wrong when I was typing God in my posts and I saw other people using the dashes.
Oops I did it again...

Re: Christmas / XMas
i never knew X was in anyway in reference to Christ
And i think God (but i definitely could be wrong here) is spelled out but it should be used in vein.
God was spelled out in all my religious books

Re: Christmas / XMas
I went to my handy "Common English Mistakes" website to see what the real reason was for XMAS.
Here's what it said:
“Xmas” is not originally an attempt to exclude Christ from Christmas, but uses an abbreviation of the Greek spelling of the word “Christ” with the “X” representing the Greek letter chi. However, so few people know this that it is probably better not to use this popular abbreviation in religious contexts.

Re: Christmas / XMas
OK, you know I can't help myself
First of all, I didn't know the origins of Xmas was anything to do with Greek origins or anything like that. And 99.5% of the people that say Xmas don't know what it means either.
I'm not trying to judge anyone. I just find it funny that the common excuse is that no one wants to type out the word, because it's too long. So, to save time, we eliminate the name of the person who (if you believe in Christ) is responsible for the holiday in the first place.
We all do it, myself included -- I'm just trying to put reminders out there in the midst of all this commercialism.

I agree that most people probably don't know the meaning behind the X so that's not why they use it. I didn't know.

I think that we use it because we saw someone else use who saw someone else etc.. I mean I dont know where I got it from and I have used it, so obviously I didnt make it up, I got it from someone, and that person got it from someone and so on...SO I think the original person knew what they were doing with the X is X-mas, we just use it as an abbreviation.
Relgion is a personal thing so I would feel bad if I offended anyone by using it, although to me it doesnt bother me.
It is great to know the origins though, ya kearn something new aeveryday huh
