Honestly, while Im grateful for the gift to my children, I hate when people give them bonds.
Ditto. I give a check, it's not up to me to decide how parents use the money for their child and if they choose to invest it, they will earn more than on a bond.

I like to give bonds -- honestly because I know a lot of parents who would pocket the cash. You're supposed to be giving a gift for the KID.
And then they get twice what you spent and (I feel) a bonus is that YES, they do take a long time to mature but guess what? You know how much that kid's gonna appreciate having an extra 200-300 bucks from you when they are dirt poor in college or just about to get married?
I cashed my bonds in last year when I was engaged. I called the people up who they were from and thanked them again and told them that their gift was helping to pay for... XYZ.
I agree. This is what I do. I used my bonds to pay for 1/2 of my honeymoon :) money is money

My parents payed the majority of our wedding by cashing in my bonds. It was great. There were few we had to take a penalty on b/c they weren't mature, but no biggie. These were mainly bonds they had bought for me along the years.

Re: not giving savings bonds in place of money for a savings account.
BECAUSE SO MANY PARENTS TAKE THE MONEY.
I'm sorry but it happens.
I've been to a lot of Christenings and Never heard of that- call me naive but I am honestly shocked that a parent would do that... we are planning my ds's now and I would die before I would think of touching a penny of his gifts
