Chimney problems - BIG problems.
The money pit (our house) strikes again!! This time it's the chimney.
when we converted from gas/oil to gas this year the put a pipe (from the burner) through the basement wall to feed into the chimney. (picture in profile slide show)
In our basement there is a little tiny door that opens that goes into the chimney. There is a well right there and it's overflowing with a liquid muck from the chimney. We didn't know what the problem was so we called a chimney guy tonight.
Something about: condensation, a metal/tin lining needs to go into the chimney, must fix asap.
Quote: $1200 ***!!!!!!!!! I have no idea if this is a reasonable price. ???? We just had to replace our water tank b/c it was leaking.

Re: Chimney problems - BIG problems.
Get another quote.
While we didn't have the same problem (condensation with the pan) we had a company tells us we needed that $1200 liner as well.
Well, I told DH get LOTS of quotes as chimney companies are notorious for ripping people off. Eight quotes later not one said we needed the liner.
Of course, you may very well need the liner (I'm no expert on chimneys) but it's best to get several opinions. I found that several chimney companies like to say you need extra work when you don't.

We converted and didn't need a liner. Shop around and get more than 3 opinions.

Re: Chimney problems - BIG problems.
that really $ucks!!
When we had our oil to gas conversion done we were told that in the Town of Islip we had to have the liner put in. Its new regulation. It cost us about $700 more...with the whole conversion.
You should check with your town if its regulation

Re: Chimney problems - BIG problems.
We had to also replace the metal liner in our chimney. I got 2 seperate co. to look at it and both said we had the same problem. $1200 sounds about right.

Re: Chimney problems - BIG problems.
Chimney companies are the pits. We had companies come in and tell us we needed a liner. Finally I had my oil company come in and take a look. They said there was a liner and not to replace it and it was fine. There were some other problems but nothing like that.
I hear this all the time from others who bring in chimney companies.
