Cheese Sandwich spinoff
With the talk about reduced lunches, and free lunches, and many people saying they were on one program or another, just wanted to make a poll to see how many of us were on assistance for lunch.
Some may qualify for more than one, but put the most assistance you've gotten.
I was on free lunch for a few years, and moved up to reduced lunch. By HS, we didn't get any assistance. (Single mom, raising 3 kids.... Go mom! )

95% of the time I brought my lunch. My mom only let me buy on an occassional Friday when it was pizza day.

Is Friday officially "pizza day" in every school? I don't recall hearing about a school that didn't have pizza on Friday....

I think it goes back to when you couldn't eat meat on Fridays (Catholics, not sure if all Christians followed this). I guess the schools had to accommodate.
At least it wasn't fish sticks.

I grew up in MA and ours was Wednesday!
I had no lunch assistance.

in Kinder and first grade, my mom would walk my lunch to school every day for me so my food would be hot I didn't eat school lunch...I remember those thermoses of tomato soup, grilled cheeses, and fish sticks. .....
then, she had my little brother and that was all she wrote...from grades 2-6 I ate what the lunch lady gave us.
as far as I know, my elementary school didn't charge anyone for lunch (NYC public school in Brooklyn)
in JHS, I "qualified" for free lunch, but it was so incredibly disgusting, I NEVER ventured into the cafeteria. We were allowed out and off school grounds for lunch, so if I had $$, I bought something (VERY RARE) more often than not I waited til I got home.
in High school, I got myself a job, and bought myself lunch every day. again, from off school grounds.

My school didn't have a cafeteria. If you forgot lunch or didn't have it you had to hope someone would share with you or you starved until 2.

Re: Cheese Sandwich spinoff
I totally cannot remember - but I don't think I ever ate cafeteria food.
In 5th grade we were allowed to go out for lunch and there was a pizza place and a little diner across the street.
Itermediate school (6-8 grades) we were allowed out for lunch as well so I was close enough to run home and make lunch.
In HS we were allowed out for lunch as well. I can guarantee I never brought lunch all the way in on the subway.

They did cahrge for school lunch in elementary. you just paid like once a month or something not at the actual lunch line. I guess because kids are still young. However, the areas I lived in brooklyn, almost everyone qualified for free lunch.

I really don't think they did in my school. I worked in the cafeteria in 5th and 6th grade as a lunch helper, and no one ever had those stickers.
granted, I lived in a pretty well off area (Park Slope) and my school was VERY small...about 300-400 students grade K-6 in the whole school.
Paying for lunch was something I never heard of until JHS.
my niece goes to the school now...I'll ask my sister the deal to be sure though.
it could also be something they started after I left...I graduated elementary school in 1986
ETA: so yeah, I was totally wrong. apparently kids DID pay for lunch...we just didn't but NO ONE had stickers or vouchers. the teachers collected money in the class room. I just never new what they were doing I guess
I guess the school was so small they didn't have to do that. the lunch ladies knew EVERYONE by name.

Re: Cheese Sandwich spinoff
I always brought my lunch, still do to this day too!! Except on Fridays I would get pizza until I realized how gross it was. Then in HS I would walk to McD's for lunch on Fridays. We were never "allowed" to go out so we had to sneak, I'm jealous that some schools actually allowed it!! And I still go out on Fridays, I guess some things never change.
Oh yea, I do remember in elementary school collecting milk money and then getting trays of it for the class.

Re: Cheese Sandwich spinoff
depending on what was for lunch that day - I would decide if I wanted to bring or buy
I remember it being a huge debate all the time... they would send home a menu every month...
in Jr and HS- I always would buy- they had better options and in HS I went out to lunch

In HS 7-12th i probably brought lunch the first 2 years and then bought lunch later on in HS

Re: Cheese Sandwich spinoff
I was usually a bringer. I think my mom was afraid I wouldn't eat the school food, but little did she know , I wasn't eating the olive loaf sandwhiches she gave me either--but she did pack good snacks!
I remember knowing free lunch was available (I think it was mentioned on those menus they sent home) but I don't know of anyone who received it. I imagine there were some kids who did though, so I wonder how they went about it discreetly or if I was just oblivious.
I am surprisd at how many of you left school for lunch. That was only allowed for seniors. My Jr high was so locked down. I don't even think you could go to the bathroom, and they sometimes we had to spend the whole lunch period silent.

Re: Cheese Sandwich spinoff
Brought my lunch with me all the way through until JHS, when I wanted to buy lunch because all my friends were buying lunch too.
Not sure exactly what it was about school lunch that appealed to me. I guess if all my friends were jumping off a bridge, I probably would've too!
In 5th and 6th grade, we were allowed to go out for lunch so a lot of times we had pizza. The pizza place was on the corner and had a special - a slice and a small coke for $1.00!
I don't think I ever stepped foot in the cafeteria in HS. My HS allowed us to hang out in the halls during our free periods, so we all just ate lunch sitting on the floor in the hallways.

Re: Cheese Sandwich spinoff
There was no lunch offered at my elementary school so I brought it every day. In junior high/high school, I think I bought my lunch for about 1 week but I hated it so I brought lunch from home all through junior high/high school unless we went out for lunch during high school.
