Changing your marriage certificate?
I've searched google for quite some time and haven't been able to find an answer - hopefully someone here can help me?
When we were filling out the marriage certificate I wasnt sure if I wanted to hyphenate my last name or just take my DH's name. Basically the woman at the office made me feel bad about hyphenating so I just put down his last name.
Now, with a clearer mind and not feeling pressure from the wedding (and everyone elses opinion) I realize I want to hyphenate it. Its been like 7 months since the wedding and I havent done anything to change my last name to DH's so basically I need to change the marriage license first and THEN start all that insanity.
Can anyone tell me how to go about this? Any resources or advice will be soooooo appreciated. TIA!

Re: Changing your marriage certificate?
I would go back to where you got your marriage certificate (or call) and see if they can answer your question. GL!

Re: Changing your marriage certificate?
I was told that you don't necessarily have to use what's on your marriage license. When I went to get ours, I wasn't sure if I wanted to hyphenate or take his or keep mine.
The woman at the town clerk told me it didn't matter. That I could do whatever I wanted after the fact (change to his name, hyphenate or keep my own). I put his name down, but still haven't done anything legally 2.5 years later.
I'm not sure if she was right, but just thought I'd share what she said.

Re: Changing your marriage certificate?
Yea, I've gotten some conflicting answers from different clerks, some of whom seem to have their own agenda which just makes me sad. I did find some stuff about adding my maiden name as a middle name (as it doesnt require getting remarried!!! DH will NOT go for that even if its just in the clerks office) but it was all for NYC not Nassau specifically.
I keep reading how its impt to change your name pretty quickly and I'm getting neurotic!

Re: Changing your marriage certificate?
If you plan to change the name on your SS card, I believe you must have the correct name on your marriage license.

Re: Changing your marriage certificate?
I was told that if I wanted to change my name I would have to petition the court for a name change. You just legally change your name. Then all other documents would have to go through name change like anything else..say credit cards..etc..

Re: Changing your marriage certificate?
Do you happen to know what exactly goes into "petitioning". I imagine its some paperwork and talking to a judge? (i really appreciate everyone's .02 - its helpful in deciding which route to take)

Agreed. You would have to get a name change - you're already married, so changing your marriage certificate won't do any good.

I believe you actually can get remarried to the same person without ever getting divorced... not sure which would be easier to do, though, just for the sake of changing your name.

Re: Changing your marriage certificate?
You have to get remarried
Requirements for an Amendment
The law permits amendments to be made to a Certificate if you claim that the mistake was made through inadvertence in any of the statements on your application. Amendments cannot be made to change your new surname. If you wish to make any change in the surname on your Certificate, you and your spouse must remarry. If you remarry your spouse to make a change in your surname, you must state your desired surname on the new Marriage License Application. If you choose to remarry for this purpose you will have to reapply for a Marriage License and a Marriage Ceremony and pay the applicable fees. ($35 for the Marriage License and $25 for the Marriage Ceremony, by money order payable to the City Clerk.) Since you were previously married the 24 hour waiting period does not apply and you can marry immediately after receiving your Marriage License.

* this is for NYC though

He actually has a pretty awesome name
Its more one of those situations where I've really identified with my maiden name and i feel like i'd be trading one identity for another while I'd prefer to just add that to what I have. Ugh, it sounds SO lame but its hard to put into words.

Thank you, I had just read that and am guessing that LI and NYC are going to be essentially the same.
Its really a matter of do I do all the crazy petitioning to add my maiden name as middle name OR remarry to get a hyphenated last name.

I don't understand why- but that's the way it is
I was told something like this too. The woman at the Town Hall said the marriage license couldn't be changed so make sure you think long and hard about whether you will take your DH's name!

I was told something more like "Well why wouldn't you take your husbands name? Don't you want to have the same last name as your children? I've been here for 15 years and never seen a single wife regret taking her husbands name." i feel silly for not standing up for what i really felt
