Carrying a toddler while pregnant?

I don't know if DS senses that I am pregnant or that something is changing- he has been clinging to me more that usual. All he wants is me to carry him or lay on me. I try not to hold him so much, but it hard. Is it bad to hold a toddler in the early stages of pregnancy?

I don't think it is bad unless you have been told to take it easy.

Re: Carrying a toddler while pregnant?

I don't think it's a problem. Up until the past few weeks where my back started to hurt & bending became very difficult, I picked up my 2 1/2 year old all the time (I still do, but just a lot less). I stopped carrying him while walking awhile ago but just because I seemed to have become extra clumsy & was afraid of tripping & dropping him.

DD is 23 lbs and I pick her up constantly. Don't know if it's "bad" or not -- it's just the way it has to be. Listen to your body. If your body's ok with it, it should be fine.

DS is over 30 lbs and I have been picking him up throughout the pregnancy. It only got harder recently and I will make him walk up the stairs, although I will still carry him down if he asks. Like the other's said, just listen to your body Chat Icon

DD is about 21 pounds and I carry her all the time. She also uses me as her personal jungle gym. I am 8 months and do not see her stopping or me stopping her any time soon.

DS is 32 lbs. I'm 22 wks. Hes extra clingy lately too. My dad keeps saying "he knows theres a baby coming and wants all the attention!". He constantly says "mommy carry, mommy carry". My back is killinggggg me so I know I have to stop. But its hard because I know he just wants a hug. Chat Icon

Re: Carrying a toddler while pregnant?

I babysit for a 3.5 year old and I picked her up and held her when necessary all throughout my pregnancy. When I ran it by my OB he basically said that if I was carrying her before being pregnant then my body was used to it and it would be OK. She had a weight check at the doc a few weeks before I delivered and she was weighing in at 38.5 lbs...and I picked her up right towards the end!!

Re: Carrying a toddler while pregnant?

DS is 32lbs and I asked my OB, she said Carrying a toddler around is not going to make a baby fall out of you. As long as you have no restrictions you are fine!

Thanks ladies. I was starting to get nervous. Everyone is telling me to stop carrying him, but he has been so clingy and only wants me to hold him. Chat Icon

Re: Carrying a toddler while pregnant?

Lots of people, especially older people, get a little crazy about lifting during pregnancy! Assuming you are having a normal pregnancy, you can't do any harm whatsoever to the baby. You can hurt your own back if you don't lift properly, since your center of gravity is thrown off, etc. My son was 13 months through 22 months during my pregnancy and he's always been a cuddly mushy boy, and I carried him all the time. The bigger my belly got, the easier it was to hold him because he would just straddle my belly and sit on top of it with his arms around my neck Chat Icon

my 2 year old DD is 26lbs and there are days when carrying her is too much for me to do. otherwise, i am pretty much used to it.

Re: Carrying a toddler while pregnant?

Kaydyn was 17 months when I got pg with DD#2 and I carried her around all the time. My OB told me that carrying her was not a problem because my body was used to carrying that weight.

Re: Carrying a toddler while pregnant?

just depends on your comfort level. dd has always been a big girl for her age. at 3 she's almost 40 lbs and i just can't carry her. i miss it so much but she's just too heavy. i cuddle and hug her at her level instead Chat Icon

Re: Carrying a toddler while pregnant?

My 3 year old has been super clingy since finding out he's going to be a big brother. He always wants to be picked up. I can still pick him up at 26 weeks, but I can't hold him for an extended period of time because it starts to hurt my back. He's about 33 lbs.
