car seat to booster
when did you move your toddler from a car seat to a booster?
DD will be 3 in the spring, and she's getting more and more "squished" in her car seat. Granted with the heavy coat its more noticeable, but I have no idea when to get a booster seat!
TIA

Get something with a 5-pt harness that then converts to a high-back booster and backless booster (so it's the last car seat purchase you'll need to make!). Two good options are the Graco Nautilus and the Britax Frontier. We have the Nautilus and love it!

Re: car seat to booster
DC must be at least 4 years old, but that's the gov't minimum, and I'm not a fan of working towards the gov't minimums. DS was 6 when we switched him, and DD is still in her car seat, and she's 6.5, and she has a while left in the car seat still.

Re: car seat to booster
DD will be 4 in March and is begging for a booster seat! We took a quick ride with my sister in law back in December and she rode in my nieces booster...no way is she big enough for it! Her head didn't come up to where the headrest is, so I know that she isn't ready. I plan on keeping her nice and safe in her convertible carseat until at least the fall. I want to make sure she really is tall enough to fit properly in a booster.

Re: car seat to booster
They shouldn't be wearing heavy coats in the carseat! My 5 year old and 6.5 years olds are still in 5 point harnesses. It's by far safer. Every step up in a carseat(infant --->convertible ----->high back booster ----> backless booster) is a huge step DOWN in safty!

car seat to booster
A backless booster generally has a weight minimum, that I doubt a 3 year old would meet. My 5 year old isn't at the weight minimum for the Graco backless booster. I have her in a Recaro Pro-Sport 5 pt harness, where she will stay until she reaches the weight limit.

Re: car seat to booster
i agree about her wearing the heavy winter coat while shes strapped in the seat. How does she fit in there without the coat on? Like if you take it off, then strap her in, and then throw the coat over her like a blanket to keep her warm? Would she have more room like that? DS is almost 27 months. Hes in a convertible- the Britax Boulevard- that will take him until 49 inches/70 pounds. So I'm thinking he'll be in there until hes between 4-5 at least. Then, I plan to probably get the Britax Frontier, which has a 5 point harness (like the convertible seat does), but then can turn into a booster that uses the seat belt. If your DD really seems uncomfy in the convertible, then maybe look at one like the Frontier, or the Graco Nautilus that still has the harness to keep her safe, but has a little bit more room than the convertibles do.

Re: car seat to booster
My DD will be 7 in April and is still in her Britax Marathon. In DH's car we switched her to the Graco Nautilus, which will convert to the booster, but not yet. She is fine in the regular car seat, buckles and unbuckles herself. I just check that the straps are snug. Once in a while she complains, but oh well. When I tried her in a high back booster last year, she squirmed too much and I really didn't feel she was secure enough.
