I don't think it's too early if they reach the height and weight requirement. Caiden was in one at 2 and Connor is now big enough for one like his big brother had. I just have to buy one. I'm going to wait until after the holidays to get it. He's just tall enough and weighs enough. Chat Icon

I just bought a Britix Frontier for DD. It's a booster to grow with them.

I would say that if your DD meets the requirements then sure. I still have S in a car seat and he'll be 3 in February. I am thinking though that when we get a new car, minivan I'm going to put him in a booster seat. My DS is just so small that I didn't want to put him in a booster yet. I'm going to look online regarding requirements.

According to the NYSDMV the child must be 40 pound or more to be in a booster seat.

My son who is quite tall went into a booster at 3.5 for other peoples cars and 4 in our own cars. I would rather be safe then sorry. JMHO, but I think two is WAY too young. What's the rush?

According to the NYSDMV the child must be 40 pound or more to be in a booster seat.

I think the law is very confusing when it comes to this. It doesn't say they have to be 40 pounds. It says it as an example of what a typical booster seat is. However, I think that is for a booster seat with no back.

I copied this from the DMV website:

Are child safety seats and child restraint systems required in New York State?

New York State law requires all children under the age of four to ride in safety seats. The law requires that all children age four, five or six ride in child restraint systems. Safety seats and child restraint systems must be certified according to Federal Motor Vehicles Safety Standard 213. Follow the instructions of the manufacturer of the seat or system, and make sure you install and use the seat or system correctly.

Note: The effective date of the requirement to use a child restraint system for a child age four, five, or six is March 27, 2005.

How do I select the correct child safety seat or child restraint system?

To select the correct protection for your child, carefully read the recommendations of child safety seat or child restraint system manufacturers. The recommendations tell you what age weight and height a child can be to use the seat or system. The recommendations are normally printed on the outside of the package.

These examples can help you to select the correct child safety seat:

Infant seats are normally for infants that weigh approximately 22 pounds or less, are 25 inches or less in length, or are less than one year old. Face the infant seat toward the back of the vehicle. Never put an infant in the front seat of a vehicle that has a passenger-side air bag.
Convertible child safety seats are normally for infants or toddlers that weigh approximately 40 pounds or less. For infants, face these seats toward the back of the vehicle. For toddlers more than one year old, you can change these seats to face the front of the vehicle. Follow the manufacturer's instructions to adjust the seat as the child increases in size.
Booster seats are normally for children who have outgrown toddler seats. Booster seats are for children who are four to eight years old, who weigh 40 to 80 pounds, and who are less than four feet, nine inches in height. You can use a booster seat until an adult seat belt correctly fits the child without use of the booster seat. · Built-in child seats are available with some vehicle models. Built-in child seats fold away from the standard car seats. Do not use these seats for infants.
Always read the instructions and the information provided in the vehicle owner manual about the use of child safety seats or child restraint systems. Make sure you install and use the seat or system correctly at all times. Never use an infant seat in the front seat of a vehicle that has a passenger-side air bag. Make sure that other passengers use their seat belts.

What is the child passenger safety law in New York State?

The law requires children under the age of four to be restrained in a federally approved car seat when riding in a motor vehicle [Section 1229-c(1), NYS Vehicle & Traffic Law].
If the weight of a child under the age of 4 exceeds 40 pounds, the child may be restrained in an appropriate child restraint system, allowing the child to use a booster seat. Children ages 4, 5,and 6 must be properly secured in an appropriate child restraint system, one for which your child meets the weight and height recommendations of the child restraint manufacturer. [Section 1229-c(1), NYS Vehicle & Traffic Law] A child safety seat or harness/vest or booster seat may be used.
The vehicle's safety belts are not defined as a child restraint system under this law, as safety belts are not designed for children under 4'9" and therefore, do not protect young children.

So 2 is too young but once they hit 4 you can get a booster seat as long as they meet the manufacturer's requirements.

There's a lot to consider. Would the booster have a 5-pt harness? My son was 4.5 before I moved him out of his Marathon. And over 40 lbs, but we went to a booster that uses a seatbelt, that's why I waited so long.

One other thing I found on the NYSDMV site:

Who should use a booster seat?

The next step of children who have outgrown a forward-facing child safety seat is a booster seat, usually when a child weighs more than 40 pounds OR grows more than 40 inches in height.
