Sorry if this has been asked before but with the Graco Nautilus and using the seatbelt is it safe to use the latch system AND the seatbelt or is this unsafe and you are only supposed to secure the seat with the seatbelt?

This answer goes with every seat - you do not use LATCH and the seat belt together. You can use one or the other but never both.

Hi Chris!

We have a 2010 Nissan Murano and currently have a 3yo DS who sits in a forward facing Britax Boulevard on the right side. DS is probably about 41" in height and 40-41 lbs.

We have a new little one coming in January who will be in a Graco Snugride in the center. We were planning on moving the Britax Boulevard into DH 2004 VW Jetta because he needs to be able to take DS to school. We were thinking of getting the Diono Radian for the Murano. I like the idea of it being a slimmer car seat and probably lasting him as he grows up. Any suggestions about this idea? Is another car seat a better option?

Thanks so much!

I would not place the baby in the center next to a toddler. If you were going to purchase the Radian a year or so ago I would have been in favor of the purchase. A thinner seat does not last longer. I would go with the Britax Frontier 90 or the Graco Argos for your car.

I have gotten too many mixed reviews on the Radian and my experience over the years does not make me lean that way for your car.

Also, as I said, I would not place a toddler next to the infant for a variety of reason including the possibility of the older child sharing something like food or a toy that can become a choking hazard.

FM me for more specific or that we can speak on the phone for things to look for.

What is the reason you do not recommend the Evenflo Symphony in certain cases?

My answer to this is car specific - I like the Symphony, however in some cars it does not install well. Normally smaller cars.

Uh oh! I bought this for DH. He has a 2011 sonata. Think it will be ok?

It should be fine - you may need to install on passenger rear though

What convertible would you recommend for grandparents Subaru outback? Will rarely be used. Dd is 30 inches, 20 pounds and is rear facing. Thanks!

Hey! I was looking for some advice. I have a 2.5 yr old that we just turned FF in a Britax Boulevard and a 7 month old in a Snugride. I'm looking to switch my youngest DD to a convertible seat. I've been happy with the Britax Boulevard and was just going to get another one, but now I'm wondering should I get my oldest DD a Frontier or the Argos which you seem to recommend and put my youngest DD in the Boulevard?

We have a 2013 Toyota Highlander.

Do you know the maximum height for rear facing in a Britax Advocate CS 70? I know they say below the seat back but i was curious if you know what the equals in inches.

DD is 32 pounds and 36 inches at 27 months and I'm terrified of ever turning her front facing. Almost to the point of wanting to buy a Clek because the height for RF is 43 inches

What are your thoughts on the advocate vs the foonf?

It is more economical to give your older child the new seat - For your car I would go with the Argos for the older child and the Boulevard for your youngest.

This is not as easy an answer as you think. The reason the seat says below the seat back is because some kids are legs, some kids are body. I can have two 36" children and they will be different n the seat.

There really is no wrong answer to your question. Is the child safe in the Advocate, yes. Is the child safe the way they are, yes. Because of the child's age and weight your DD can be safe in either situation.

Thanks! I'm just curious why not the Frontier? I'm not the biggest fan of Graco's customer service, so I try to avoid purchasing their products, but obviously will if the Frontier isn't going to work properly.

I find the Frontiers, with the exception of the newest 90 do not work as well with the Toyota Highlanders. I find the Argos fits every car well and adjustment is nice. Also, most parents I have had prefer the Graco Booster over the Frontier.

That all said - Britax has one of the finest Customer Service groups of any company out there.

We currently have a matrix and my twins are in the 50-75% for height and weight. Looking into purchasing a new car and we like the highlander (i dont think we can handle a minivan lol). Not sure if I can brace in a toyota.
I was asking your general opinion of ease of install, daily use etc.

Go either Britax Marathon or Boulevard - Radian is not as easy to install in the Toyota.

I am really curious as to why you shouldn't use the seatbelt AND the latches to hook your carseats in. I'd love to know why?

First it is against every car seat manufactures directions. The Child seat is designed to react one way with the seat belt and another with the LATCH. By using both you are placing pressure at several points along the shell of the seat that was not made to occur.

If you look at your owners manual you will see directions on how to install the seat with LATCH and how to with the seat belt system.

Using both you are actually endangering the child's safety. There is a misconception here that more is better. If you look at the LATCH strap and a seat belt you will see it is not a solid piece of material but rather a weave. This is the case because the straps are designed to stretch out which absorbs the forces of the crash. This movement must be allowed. By doubling the connection by using both the forces of the crash will be transferred to the child.

Therefore we never use the LATCH and seat belt.

I recently installed the Radian RXT. Can I use the infant inserts that came with the car seat without using the headrest part? My DS is 20lbs, 30 inches tall.

Re: Car Seat Chris is Back

I am so glad for this thread! It comes at a time when I have a million questions at once. Thank you Chris!

DS is 4 1/2 - 43 lbs and 42 inches.

We have a 2005 Civic and 2010 CRV. Our current car seats are the Britax Pavilion 70 G3 and the Graco My Ride.

1) Which seat is best for which car, and where is the best placement for that car seat in that particular car? No one/nothing else is back there besides him.

2) Is the latch weight limit 40 lbs or 50 lbs?

3) I need to buy a seat for DS' grandfather's car, as he drives him a couple of times a week. He has a 2013 Nissan Altima. What do you suggest for that car?

Thanks again!!!

I am actually impressed that you are continuing to use a harness for your child beyond 4. Use the Pavilion in the CRV and the My Ride in the Civic. I would go withe the passenger rear for the seats. Main reason is the positioning of the shoulder belts makes the side easier to install that the middle.

LATCH is limited to 40 lbs

For the grandfathers car go with the Graco Argos or Nautilus
