Can I keep the cats away?

One of my neighbors feeds a bunch of stray cats. They come and go through my yard and I would like to try to limit this if possible, since I am finding poop in the yard, it sometimes smells like cat urine and I think they are digging up sections of the grass.

I thought I read somewhere that you could put things down to keep them away. I don't want to hurt the cats or use anything that would be toxic for my son. Any suggestions?

Re: Can I keep the cats away?

i would LOVE to know what to do to keep cats out.....our neighbor is disgusting and leaves her basement apartment window open with no screen in it (this window is at ground level where there is all grass and dirt) and her cats go in and out of the window as they please....its digusting that she leaves it open with no screen and its even more gross that her cats climb up on her furniture to reach the window and to come in and out...we ask her all the time to keep the cats inside and she tries to say she doesnt let them out! when we can cleary see her nasty open window Chat Icon my MIL lives upstairs from us and she gets ****** b/c the cats come on her deck and in our yard....when i open the windows i am starting to smell ammonia - i dont know if its from the ladys house (this lady looks filthy) or from them peeing in my ILS yard? oh and one of her cats scratched my dogs face open a few months ago while i was walking her and almost ripped her eyes outChat Icon

i am so tempted to call animal control and say it is stray cats so they take the cats away....her cats are dirty and mean!

Yikes, not all cats are that mean.

I think I read coffee grinds, moth balls and I forget the name but there is something natural to put on lawn that will keep them away too that wont harm them.
cats are good to keep the mice away and possums/racoons. they are a good thing to have around. hopefully if they are someones they have a tag with a bell so the birds can hear them coming and fly away.

i feel bad for the cats b/c the owner is icky - she supposedly rescued them but she doesn't seem to take care of them and she lets them roam the neighborhood - she also has 2 dogs that we've seen - i think she is a hoarder among other things Chat Icon

this is what one cat did to my dog as we were walking past it outside....i was really upset over it - my dog got cut on both sides of her face right under her eyes! at first i didnt realize it was her cat - thought it was a stray - cost me almost $200 at the vet - and we know the woman is piss poor so its not like we could even ask her to pay for the bill....the least she could do is keep the freakin cats inside! im just glad my dog was caught off guard by the cat - otherwise i think she would have killed it Chat Icon Chat Icon

omg poor puppyChat Icon and youre right I think your dog would have chomped the cat.
if these are strays I hope they are at least spayed/neutered and if its a ferrel cat the way to know it has been fixed and vaccinated is if one of the tip of the ears is snipped making that ear flat instead of pointy. poor cats
it is sad b/c its really the owner.
but you dont want them making a mess of your home either. I will look online for that stuff that apparently works real well and is natural and safe for your own pets/ kids.

Re: Can I keep the cats away?

I have 2 cats that roam my property too, and I absolutely skeeve cats (sorry to the cat lovers)! I heard moth balls do the trick as well. Do you have a fence? We don't yet and I was hoping that once we did, we could fill the gaps that they use to get in and out. I am not aware if anyone is feeding them or if they are strays, but I am petrified of cats and I think they can sense fear. Let me know if you find anything that works.

Re: Can I keep the cats away?

We have the sam exact issue at our house & just recently discovered a mother & her kittens in our flowerbed. Fortunately with work being done to our house, the mother cat took her kittens to a safer spot across the street.

What has worked for me in the past was chili powder, citrus smelling spray, they do sell a Boundaries granuales you put down at the PetStore (about $9). Remember that animal control will DO NOTHING & you would be required to bring them to the town shelter. I see someone said something about a fence, we have a nice PVC fence & have no gaps, but the cats climb up & over. So that is not a solution
