Can anyone recommend a good external harddrive?
We have a faily new PC but I want to buy an external drive to use solely for music, movie downloads and pics.
Can anyone recommend one?
I prefer one with 1.0 terabytes.
TIA!

I don't have any info on TB drives, but Seagate has really good drives in general. Western Digital is good, too. (They used to have problems years ago, but they've fixed all the problems they were having, and they're OK again...). I have a 250GB Western Digital at home, and no problems or complaints.

I was going to say the same thing about Segate. That's what we have. It's not a TB drive though.

Re: Can anyone recommend a good external harddrive?
I got a great one for huge programs, downloads, pics etc.
It is called MyBook. It just plugs in. Very easy to use. Stays plugged in to the USB port. Has a huge memory, 465 GB.
I highly recommend. Bought it at Computer Associates I think.
I am not sure what you mean about Terabytes. I am not that computer savvy.
Here is the product I have.my book

A Terabyte (TB) is 1000 Gigabyte (GB), so she is looking for a drive more than twice the size of yours.
I'm planning on getting a series of smaller (250-350GB) drives and combining them to have a total of 1TB or more.

I second mybook storage. They are very reliable and looks cool. You can usually get them for good prices at newegg.com.
1 TB is stil expensive, so best if you get 2 of the 500GB instead.
Good luck!

Thanks, everyone! I'm interested in this, too.
I like the idea of several smaller external HDs. A computer person recommended several smaller ones as backup. That way, if one fails (knock on wood), you haven't lost everything.

I don't have any recommendations but a question. So with the external hard drive you could put all your pictures and big downloads so it would help the computer move faster without having all of them on it?

Exactly. THat is what I did. For example, I have a huge scrapbooking program that takes up so much memory that my computer could not function.
So I bought the MyBook, and loaded that program on there instead. In addition to moving most of my pics, music, etc, to it.
My computer works great now. I highly recommend. Even dummies can use it. And what is great that I direct my antivirus program to make backups onto that MyBook harddrive, so it is very very useful.

Extra files on your harddrive don't slow the machine down (as long as you have enough space for Windows to work). However, if you have an external drive, it gives you more room to store more stuff, gives you the ability to move the files to another computer easily, you can use the drives as backup, so if the harddrive in your computer dies, you have another copy on the external drive.
I have all of my photos on my HD at home, and external drive at home, my laptop, my HD at work, and an external drive at work. I transfer the 20GB+ of files using my home external drive. Just unplug it from home, and plug it in at work. Very simple.

Re: Can anyone recommend a good external harddrive?
I have one question too - say you have a laptop...can you plug it in and plug it out as you want/need? We use our laptop all over the house but when it comes to uploading photos I want to be able to do that and then unplug it.
TIA!
