Calling the Shorties - specifically 5'2" - 5'4"

I realize we aren't the shortest of the short. That's partly why I need to ask this question.

Do you buy your pants in petite or regular length?

Where do they hit - just below the ankle (pic1)? lower(pic2)? Where are they supposed to fall? Or do you have them hemmed so they are just right?

I'm 5'4" and buy both ... but these days need to buy petite way more often since the inseam on regular seems to be so much longer.

Basically though all my pants are a teeny tiny bit too short (for my taste, for anything but flats) or almost too long.

And I hate getting pants hemmed - I hate spending as much as it seems to cost. And the last two times (from different places) I've had pants done, the hems fell out!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon

5'2

I buy both...petite and average.

Petite tends to be worn with flats or semi low heels.

Average/Regular lentgh- tend to be ones for heels and they look like the 2nd pic...where they land for me with heels.
At times, they need to be hemmed and I hate that cause I spend another $10.

I am 5'4 and I buy them in regular length and have them hemmed. The petite never fit right on me for some reason.

I buy regular because I have long legs and a short waist. I was buying low-rise jeans with a 32" inseam before low-rise was popular just to make my torso seem longer.

I was just having this issue in Ann Taylor loft last week!

I'm about 5'4", but I have porprtionately short legs. About a 28-29 " inseam.

Petites usually fit well, but they can look too short with heels.

I bought regular pants that were on sale & took them home to try with my highest heels, and they are still too long. They look like that 2nd picture & are too hard to walk in.

I'll wreck the bottom of the pants & I can only wear them with those particular shoes.

I an debating returning vs. hemming.

On the other hand, today I have petites pants wth heeled boots on & they look like cropped pants!

I think I heard that pants are supposed to fall to the top of the heel of your shoe.

i'm 5'3", usually i buy regular and have them hemmed. I feel like all the Short and ankle length don't allow me to wear heels.
Today, i'm wearing Ankle lengths and i couldn't wear my regular heels, had to wear shorter ones.

I am 5'2", but I can't ever wear petite - they are always too short, but regular is always too long! I have pretty long legs for a short person....my torso is miniature.

I either hem my pants or wear 3.5" heels.

I'm 5'4"....The Gap and Ann Taylor petites fit are right on me in the length...I aim for not as short as your first pic, but shorter than the 2nd. They always say in makeover shows that the really long ones elongate the legs, but it just doesn't make sense to me to wear them--they get so wet and dirty dragging on the ground.

i'm 5'3" - i always buy regular. petite length is way too short.

i need to wear heels with most of my pants, and they tend to look like picture #2

i personally think that the pants are too short in pic #1

I buy both... I'm 5'2. For me, it really depends on the brand/store... Gap's "short" inseam hits is a good lenght for my stubby gams... Other places, it's easier for me to just get regular length and get them hemmed because sometime the petite sizes just don't fit me well everywhere else because, well, I'm just not petite everywhere else.

Usually Regular length and get them hemmed.

I don't really fit into petites well. I feel they are also slimmer in the crotch/hip area, and I have to go up a size when wearing petites...which my ego doesn't like too much.

If I can find Short (not petite), I'll try them, but sometimes they are too short still.

I like my pants to fall below my ankle, but not cover my whole foot.

I prefer my pants to look like picture #2. I get regular lengths and always have them shortened. When I get the short they work with flats but are just a teeny bit too short with heels.

Ok so it seems that most of you are where I am with petites - they just don't fit right and are too short most of the time. I've never found a pair of petites that fit right so I only buy regulars.

Sometimes regulars are too long even with my highest heels though. I don't like when they bunch up at the bottom over my shoe or worse - when they drag. But I do like that the longer length gives the illusion of being taller and slimmer.

I'm usually in high heels so I guess I'm looking for a brand that will lay right with high heels (3.5" - 4").

Sounds like maybe Ann Taylor is a good brand to try... or else hemming is the way to go.

Thanks for the input ladies. Chat Icon

BabyAvocado,

I've had amazing luck with VS's dress pants. They come in different lengths.

I would def buy a few pairs in different lengths to check them out.

I think that the reason petite looks odd on me is because even though I'm only 5'4ish, I'm still longlegged, if you know what I mean. Chat Icon

Thanks for the suggestion. I always think their stuff looks great - on the models (that's where the first pic is from). I bought a pair of pants from them a long long time ago and I remember them fitting well, but I haven't thought of trying them in a while.

Shorty - I buy NY&Co all the time and sometimes they are too long also ... I guess it depends on the fit style.

Sandara, I find in ATL, it also depends ont eh cut. Most pants are either Marissa, Ann, or Julie fit.

The Marissa pants, are a lower waists, and I thougth that wouldn't work for me, but I have those in petite & they are a good length for a low-medium heel.

I didn't have to go up a size, which I sometimes do there.

The regulars I bought are Ann, I think, and they are still huge with 3 1/2 inch heels.

I prefer pants that are "ankle" length, but I don't see that around as much.

NY & Co used to have that, and it was good- they were just a little shorter, but not small all over, like petites.

I am 5'2 and I always get frustrated with pants being so long! I usually buy regular length and get them hemmed. If pants come in short length I will buy them, petite pants are usually so short in the crotch for me...Chat Icon

I. Hate. Buying. Pants.

If I go for the regular, then not only do I have to get them hemmed (in case my heels aren't high enough) sometimes I get this weird crotch hang. Too much material.

If I go for petite, I feel like I never find the cut that I want or I have to wear flats. And I hate flats as much as I hate buying pants.

ITA.

i am 5' 2" and a size 0, 00. i rarely buy pants because they are always too big (waist, azz, legs). i really only wear dresses, skirts and jeans. when buying jeans i always buy them in a regular size and have them hemmed. since i always wear heels and dry the jeans, the petite length is too short.
