Re: "call a spade a spade"

A Jewish friend of mine was offended that I used "Here Comes the Bride " at my weeding ceremony, apparently the composer had ties to the nazis and Hitler. I actually researched this (the day before my wedding when I found this out ), turns out Hitler just happened to enjoy the music of this composer so I went ahead with things as planned.
Wagner? I'm sorry, but that's a bit ridiculous. Hitler also like vegetarian food. Is that next?

Exactly, that is why I went ahead with things as planned without reservation.

I think it's a stretch for a Jew to attend a non-Jewish wedding and have the audacity to be offended that someone chose "Here Comes the Bride" as their wedding march, however, my best friend is Jewish and she would not use that song for her wedding because of his Nazi connections.
As far as "calling a spade a spade" I have used that phrase and will continue to do so. The phrase itself is not at all racist, regardless of people occasionally using the word "spade" to refer to black people. In the article posted, it doesn't really even come across as being used as a derogatory term, unless I'm missing something.
Also, I generally think of spade to mean shovel.
I'm all for not deliberately offending people and never using racist terms, but I also don't believe in completely sanitizing everything for fear of unintended offense. No one should be walking around this earth thinking they have some sort of right to never be offended. We need to learn how to deal with being offended instead of trying to eliminate every possible cause for offense.

Re: "call a spade a spade"
FYI. I am Jewish. It's fairly common within the religion to know the nazi ties of Wagner. There for you will probably never see a Jewish woman walk down the aisle to it.
But for a Jew to be offended that someone used that music at their own wedding is a bit redic. No. Not a bit. It is redic.
Not everyone knows this. Frankly your friend is stupid and I don't use that word lightly.
That like saying one person who attends the wedding has a tin foil phobia and was offended you served baked potatoes wrapped in tin foil. Redic.

I use that phrase sometimes, now that I know it may offend I will try to cut down.
There are a couple of things that had no idea were offensive to people that apparently are.......
Another term I had no clue about was "picnic " , it is offensive to some African Americans because it is said to have originated from a "pick a ni*****" party during slavey. Never looked into this one myself.
So long story short, people can try not to offend but it isn't always that easy. I feel like if I am missing things on a regular basis and I live and grew up in a relatively unsheltered, diverse area and have friends and coworkers of many many different cultures different from my own , how far behind are other people not in my situation ?
Once I learned the roots of "Eenie meanie Miney mo" I could never say it again.

I did not use Wagner, but I fully understand why a non Jewish bride would pick it as it is the most traditional wedding processional melody. Your friend is insane and frankly, insensitive for stressing a bride out over her wedding processional song.

Re: "call a spade a spade"
When I hear "call a spade, a spade" I think of cards. That's where I thought it came from. Like the card cannot be changed, therefore the situation cannot.
