Re: Cablevison channels
Yup I got a notice as part of my bill. It stinks big time, I guess they aren't waiting until February of next year to go fully digital.

Thanks for the clarification Blazysyth. Very informative and makes me feel a little better knowing I don't have to replace two devices in my house.

No problem. Unfortunately, I think there are a lot of people out there (the elderly for the most part) that doesn't understand, and they're going to be looped into paying Cablevision 150 bucks a month when they really don't need it.
Also saw this more info on the DTV Gov't site.
Does the DTV transition affect TV sets that are connected to cable services?
No. If you subscribe to cable service, the DTV transition should not affect any TV sets that are connected to your cable services. The DTV transition applies only to full-power broadcast television stations – stations that use the public airwaves to transmit their programming to viewers through a broadcast antenna.
Is the FCC making cable companies switch to digital service?
No. Cable companies are not required to switch to digital service. Cable companies may choose to make their service all or partly digital, but they are not required to change from the analog service they offer today. In fact, the FCC requires cable companies to continue to provide local stations in analog as long as they provide any analog service, even after February 17, 2009.
Can my cable company make me get a box to receive the cable channels I receive today without a box?
Some cable companies have decided to switch to digital service. This is a business decision made by the cable companies and is not required by the federal government. Your cable company may decide to move certain cable channels off of its analog service tier and onto a digital service tier, or it may decide to switch to all-digital service at once, so that there is no analog service tier for any subscribers. If your cable company decides to move some or all of the channels it provides onto a digital service tier, it may notify you that you need to get “digital cable” equipment to continue receiving that cable service. This may include renting or purchasing a digital cable set-top box or purchasing a digital cable ready TV equipped with a “CableCARD” slot. The digital cable equipment is different from the digital-to-analog converter boxes that are used to receive over-the-air broadcast signals.

I can definitely believe that. And I wouldn't even classify it as just elderly. Here I was thinking I was going to have to replace an LCD TV I just bought three months ago. I am sure there are plenty of people that are misinformed, hence the consumerist article.
Hopefully they don't remove any of the 2 or 3 channels I currently watch in the analog tier. So far i've been safe from Cablevision's antics.

Actually employees pay for the boxes.
They say they get free cable, but they really pay for the boxes. They get free phone and internet though.
They pay for their boxes because if Cablevision didn't charge "something" for their boxes, they would be forced by the government to declare the free cable as income on their taxes.
So most employees that have cable boxes have between a $5 and $20 bill (for well over $200 worth of services).

Yeah, we all just have to be smart enough to know the real story. It's upsetting how they try to take advantage. This is why them now owning newsday makes me .
BTW, your 3 month old TV - I think for the past 6 months at least (probably longer) it's also been a rule that any new TV that was NOT going to work after the switch had to be labeled with the warning that it's not going to work afterwards and would need a digital conversion box. I've seen a bunch of little TV's at Best Buy and other retailers labeled.

Re: Cablevison channels
Looks like it's time to check out FIOS. I wanted to keep Cablevision so I could have News 12 and 61 for traffic and weather, but if they keep screwing around and uping rates they can shove it up you know what.
We have TV's in the family room, living room, bedroom, kitchen, DH's office and the basement bar area, with additional hookups available in the guest bedroom. Currently have one IO box that we move from the living room (in winter) to the family room (in summer). I have no intention of paying for more boxes and remotes just to watch in the kitchen and bedroom, and occasionlly in the other rooms. I'll listen to the radio before I continue to give more money to Cablevision.
I guess they have to pay for purchasing Newsday and those friggin foreign language stations somehow.

You know I purposely said that wondering how many "But i know so-and-so and they get free cable" responses I would get.
They pay for their boxes. So in essence, it's NOT free.

Must be a newer thing because when my DH worked there we didn't pay for squat. My sister works for corporate and I believe she pays squat too. I will have to check though.

Employees have been paying for their boxes for at least the last year. It's been that way for at least that long.
Granted they are getting well over $200 bucks worth of free service between the IO, phone, internet, and all the channels and ondemands.
The reason why Cablevision charges the employees for the boxes is to prevent the government from asking Cablevision to start declaring the amount of free cable they get as income for the employees.
So Cablevision decided... do we really give free cable and add over two grand worth of taxable income for every employee...
or just charge them a pathetic amount so we can really say "it ain't free".
Cablevision did the right thing.

Re: Cablevison channels
Even QVC has gone digital. Annoying! I hate the box and don't want one in my room because it takes FOREVER for the channel to change after you punch in the number. Maybe I have no patience, I dunno!

Re: Cablevison channels
This is why I love Direct TV. I HATE cablevision. Ever since they did not cover the Yankees for a year I swore them off. they were a monopoly for a long time on LI and they have always taken advantage of it. I still can't believe how much money people pay for cablevision.
