c-section ladies come in...gas question!
Hi ladies, Posting for my friend who just had a baby. She unfortunately had to be put under after her baby was born via c-section due to some complications. She was in surgery for over 3 hours and is having excruciating gas pains from being cut open for so long. The nurses are making her walk and she said it's not helping - she can't seem to pass it she said.
Just wondering if any of you c-section mom's who had bad gas has any tips I can pass on to her. She's going to be in the hospital for another week.
TIA!

I had horrible horrible gas pains after my last c-section. The nurses gave me mylicon (pills not the drops) and also ginger tea - which was really just heated up ginger ale.

I will first add my disclaimer to defer all questions to your personal MD but i had read a medical journal study about the post-op benefits of gum chewing. Basically their results were that those who chewed gum passed gas quicker. I chewed gum and had my bowels went on as normal very quickly.

if she walks, she's not going to pass gas immediately, but it will help. when she thinks she has walked enough, walk some more. i have also heard that enemas help too, but they are last resort.

With my c section the hospital gave me chewable gas x and boiled gingerale with a tea bag. That helped move things along believe it or not!

Re: c-section ladies come in...gas question!
With my first csection my whole digestive system was a mess. I ate solids before passing gas. As a result I was in so much pain and had cramping to the point I had to have a ct scan. The scan revealed that I had so much gas and my colon was filled with you know. End result Enema not fun.

Tea and ginger ale, mixed together and warmed. And apple juice to get the digestive track working.

peppermint tea, any mint tea ... it really helps. movement is really the best way to break it up. simethicone (gas medicine) helps. i remember how bad it was
hope she feels better ASAP!

Re: c-section ladies come in...gas question!
i had a complicated c section under general also, it was over 2.5 hours long. i spent the next two days on magnesium and morphine so i wasnt allowed to get up and walk around. by day 3 i was up and had such bad gas that my stomach was extended larger than when i was pregnant. they did a sono and my bowels were looped and just hadn't started working yet. they had to take me off of food and put me back on IV because when I tried to eat there was literally no where for the food to go since my bowels weren't active yet, i would just throw it up. i felt HORRIBLE. the next day i did start walking and although it took about 36 hours, eventually it started to go down and i started to feel better. i dont have any miracle cures. 3-hour c sections are very tough. i know it sounds ridiculous but the sooner she can get up and walk the better. it really does help get things moving down there. good luck to her

Re: c-section ladies come in...gas question!
The hospital gave me GasX pills AND stool softeners. I didn't have a BM until 6 days pp, so I was in terrible pain. The gas pains were in my shoulders, neck, arms, etc.... I just tried walking as much as possible and hoped for the best. I hope she feels better soon!

Have her ask the nurses for the as pills and stool softeners at the exact hourly mark when she can have them (every 3 or however many hours). And the walking. I hope she feels better quickly!

Re: c-section ladies come in...gas question!
I had the worst gas pains in my back...I actually thought I was dying or had a blood clot. I could not believe it was gas. They nurses gave me chewable gas X and tea and it helped within a few hours..plus I got up walkking.

Re: c-section ladies come in...gas question!
I had awful gas pains. I even had pains up in my chest that felt like air bubbles and hurt when I breathed. They said that was gas at the hospital... BUT I've never experienced it like that before. I too was put under for longer than the usual. Then they had to send my unconscious body through an xray machine because they lost a needle. in any event... nothing but time really helped me. i hope your friend feels better soon.
