Bringing kids to San Gennaro Feast?
I've never been and always wanted to go. I was thinking of going this weekend, but is this a place you bring kids to?
I've heard it gets very crowded. Is it safe?

It's a madhouse and I doubt I'd bring little kids. If they are a little older with phones, then maybe because you can connect if you get separated.

I haven't been in years but when I did go it was wall to wall people. Way too crowded for me.

You can, but I would not just because of how crowded it is. You cannot move. Last year it took us literally, because I timed it, 20 minutes to move 6 feet. I never understand every year all the parents that bring kids, not because it isn't appropriate, in theory it is, just because they get trampled and lost very easily in that type of crowd. As for safety, the crowd gets very seedy late on Saturday nights, day is fine.

OMG the thought of that mess gives me hives. I can't take crowds like that. Nothing on this earth is worth it. I'd never bring my child. But then again, I'd never bring my 43 year old self so....

It's really not worth it and every year I go I say this is the last time , but usually get roped into it and it is tradition. If there were like 20,000 less people in the 3 blocks of the feast it would be Great. But I say this as I already have tentative plans to go this weekend

Re: Bringing kids to San Gennaro Feast?
I stopped going years ago because of the crowds of people. I don't do crowds very well. I can't imagine bringing children.
eta : I'd rather visit local feasts to get my zeppole fix.

I feel like this is just another example of something fun getting ruined by overcrowding/overpopulation. Want to see the Jones Beach Air Show? Get there 4 hours early and stay 4 hours after to avoide 4 hours of traffic in and out. 4 th of July fireworks? You'll sit 2 hours trying to get out. Pumpkin picking out east? Forget it on the weekends in the fall- nightmare traffic and crowds. Rock Center Tree at Xmas- you might as well give me a Xanax now because the thought of the crowds to even get NEAR that area are the stuff of nightmares.
It makes me not want to do anything!
My DH and I say it all the time- living on LI/NYC really sucks the fun out of everything due to the crowds

Bringing kids to San Gennaro Feast?
I know it's safe but was wondering about the crowds. My DH's grandma will be in town next week and we thought this would be a cool thing for her to experience. We were thinking of going next Thursday or Friday during the day with our 6 and 2 year old. Now I am not sure if we should even bother.

So funny - I feel the same way about all those things. I would love to go to Rockefeller to see the tree with the kids, but - NOPE!! And every year when I see New Years at Times Square on TV, all I can think is WHY?!?!? It looks like my idea of hell!! A bizallon people, COLD and just standing there with no bathroom!! I think I did the San Gennero festival once when i was in my early 20s probably. I only have a vague recollection of it - pushing through crowds to get some zeppoles. And that's literally all I remember.

I'm assuming a week day would be better, but I've never been during the week. I would pick Thursday over Friday as I find a lot of people take off Fridays! But if your grandmother doesn't walk very well I wouldn't even consider it.

Unfortunately, it's the truth. There are just way too many people! been trying to get to the Air Show for years now...was going to go this year and then found out I would have to be there FOUR HOURS before it started???? Hell no! I'll watch the clips on youtube! Times Square on New Years....not enough money in the world could get me there!

Agreed. Especially if free/family time is limited to weekends where every "fun" event is haulted by overbearing crowds.
Last year we went to a Halloween event in early October & couldn't walk, couldn't sit, couldn't enjoy it because of a big crowd on a 60 deg day.
If you go to feast on a Sat, I recommend going early like around lunch time.

Re: Bringing kids to San Gennaro Feast?
As a kid, I went every year. My parents brought us there because my mom grew up on Mulberry Street, with her whole family that immigrated over. I loved it as a kid and I have so many memories from that.
That being said, I think it was maybe more emotional for me and I am not sure I'm giving a helpful answer.

It wasn't as crowded back then though. Nothing was.

I'm not gonna lie, I'm also concerned about a crazy terrorist plowing down people in a truck since there will be a lot of people there. They love targeting big crowds of people.
It's so sad to have to think this way

I wouldn't bring myself there. Much less kids Those streets are so narrow and busy on a normal day I could never walk around there during the feast.

Nope. I used to go all the time. It's super crowded you can't walk people stepping on your feet etc. I wouldn't.

Bringing kids to San Gennaro Feast?
Just to echo everyone else, I went once not knowing what to expect and it was horrible. Every ounce of potential enjoyment is removed by wall to wall people, not even exaggerating. Sweaty people leaning into you. Even if you have the patience to push your way up to food, there isn't anywhere to sit (or even comfortably stand) and enjoy it. I will never go again and if I were crazy enough to change my mind I would never bring kids under 12yo or so.

And yet it continues to be packed every year. Some people are just gluttons for crowds and punishment it seems!
