Breastfeeding woes

DS 2 is currently 11 weeks. So far we are doing good but it's definitely a challenge making sure I have at least three 5oz bottles a day for daycare. I get at least an hour break every day and lucky to work very close to home so I pump at that time. If I have errands to run they have to wait because 9 hours without pumping and I'd be leaking and hurting. I worry about if/when my supply will take a dip. With DS 1 we made it to 18 months but when my supply dropped there were days I'd stress if he'd have enough bottles for daycare. This time around I made a decent freezer supply.

A friend if mine is having very painful nipples due to nursing her 3 week old too frequently. She admitted every time the baby fusses she puts him on her boob. Any advice for her?

Keep it up girls it is so worth it! I am almost at 13 months and still loving it!

I had some plugged duct issues too and mastitis (with 104 fever and the worst feeling EVER) but made it through. Whenever DD dropped a feeding I got lumps ugh but hot compacts and combing my boob in the shower (ouch) helped! Try latching your baby all different ways, football hold, nurse laying in bed, etc. It will help with her latch on that side.

Also FTR I didn't lose the rest of the weight until way later…like 12 months. My body held onto it like crazy. I tried not to let it bother me though!

What is combing the boob? Sounds excruciating! Chat Icon

It is excruciating but it works!

Do a heat pack for 20 min. Then go in the shower and take a wide tooth comb and soap and comb all over your lumpy boob. Then nurse nurse nurse your baby on that bad boob. If she keeps unlatching, just keep putting her on. Or do the other side for a few min and then back on the hurt side. I had to nurse my DD for 40 min one night on the bad boob and it finally came unclogged - it was such a relief when it came through. I had this huge painful lump in there and it was suddenly GONE! The pump did not work to get it out fyi - you need to put DD on the boob ALOT! HTH!!! GOOD LUCK!!!

IMO, there's no such thing as too much at 3 weeks old. I made sure to apply lanolin after every single feeding and I never had any pain. I know some people don't love it bc it's so sticky but it worked perfectly for me.

I totally agree. At 3 weeks, when the baby is fussing, 9 times out of the 10 it is because they want to be nursed. I would tell her to keep doing what she's doing. The painful nipples could be due to the baby's latch and not the frequency of feeding. Lanolin will definitely help!

Re: Breastfeeding woes

The more you nurse the better. If you do think you have mastitis take it seriously! I didn't and ended up in ER and needed to have an incision, when DS was only 3 months old. More painful than childbirth for me! I still could nurse and we're going strong at 24 months.

I stopped pumping and gave DS milk at babysitters and still continued to nurse at home at 12 months. Don'r stress about pumping. Also, I too left 3 bottles of 5 oz, but they usually only used 2. Make sure they aren't overfeeding.

Re: Breastfeeding woes

This is a great thread. All the mommies who are BF, even 1 day, should feel good about it. DS2 is almost 10 weeks old and we are EBF. I pumped exclusively most of the 1st 4 weeks bc he was so sleepy and wouldn't latch and I was so worried about his weight. Started EBF after seeing an LC, Dr. Lauren Macaluso, when he was 4 weeks. She was amazing and got him to latch instantly when another LC hadn't been successful. He was born 8lbs10oz at his apptmt this week(9 weeks) he was 13lbs6oz! But it is so hard sometimes and I came close to giving up more than once, most recently at around 7-8 weeks. Luckily DH supports me and has given me support when I needed it.

Have had mastitis and a plugged duct and think I'm developing a plug again today. It is extremely painful and with the mastitis I had such horrible body ache, for my DS1's 4th birthday party no less. I found that massaging the area while BF helped and also pumping on that side using a strong setting and massaging at the same time, almost like running my fingers along my breast hard, as if using a comb if that makes sense. GL to all of you!!!Chat Icon For something that is so natural, it sure is hard!

Re: Breastfeeding woes

For those who has mastitis or a plugged duct how did you know it was unclogged? I started antibiotics yesterday and feel much better- after pumping the affected boob often and once yesterday for an hour I think i finally emptied it.... But now when I pump I only get an ounce... It feels empty and much less sore. I bf'ed dd1 for 8 months are never had this and needless to say I don't ever want it again!
