Breast milk and flying
i need all the help I can get. I will be traveling without DD and I hope to come back with everything I pumped for 2 days. Any cooler suggestions for the plane?

You can definately come home with 2 days worth of milk.
I had a babies r us brand cooler bag and some ice parks from cvs. I had no trouble at all

But how do I keep the ice packs frozen in the hotel - will those mini fridges really do the trick? I guess my biggest question is that I need a cooler that will fit about 50 oz of milk and ice packs to keep it cold but only on the way home. Should I buy stuff in NC? Should I travel with the empty cooler there and then come home with it full?

I traveled with an empty cooler because we were going to turks and caicos for 4 days and did not want to worry about finding a cooler. I had ice packs with me because I was pumping that whole day going too - I was pumping for twins so I had a lot of milk.
I kept the milk in the fridge - because if frozen milk thaws it needs to be used within 24 hours - so I kept it all in the hotel refrigerator.
on trip home I used my ice packs but I also asked the hotel for a couple bags of ice - I brought my own Ziploc backs to fill so it would leak less
the cooler I got was a soft cooler from kmart that said it would not leak and could stay cold for like 12 hours - it worked evefrything was cold when we got home
I carried a copy of my child's birth certificate and the TSA rules for breast milk but neverf needed them - the breast milk was never opened

Omg yes. We went away and had a fridge with a small freezer cube. I put my ice packs in there for our bottle bag and I had one of the bottles close, not even in, to it and it froze that too!

i asked the hotel to freeze the ice packs for me. they put my name & room number on them when i checked in and kept them there all week until i checked out and asked for them.
i kept the breast milk in the small room refrigerator - not frozen bc as pp mentioned it would start to thaw out and then need to be used within 24 hours.
i would travel with the empty cooler bags and ice packs - its easier then trying to find them. the cooler bag i used was soft so you could pack it with socks or something and fit it in your suitcase for your trip down.
i ended up coming home with 120+ ounces of breastmilk...my cooler bag was NOT enough and even though it was july, i couldnt find any cooler bags. instead i picked up the gallon size ziploc bags, doubled them up, put 2 bottles of milk with one ice pack in each bag and put them inside my carry on.
when i flew home i worried they were going to tell me it was too much milk, but they only seemed to test what was in the cooler bag - not sure if they even noticed all the ziplocs filled with milk & ice

So glad this was posted. I'm traveling in 2 weeks with OUT DS (internationally) and was worried that I would have to discard the pumped milk. I will be traveling back 24 hours so I'm hoping I could keep my milk cold via ice for the time I am traveling. I will ask the hotel if they can keep my ice packs frozen if the freezer in the room isn't cold enough. And I will carry zip lock bags to keep ice in to bring my milk home cold. We're going away for over a week so I know I can't keep all the milk ?(it has to be frozen within 5-6 days from being pumped right?
